Installed sound forge 8&9 and audioacity and still no further forward

my kids laptop even tho its only a few months old only has a mic input not a line in input.

so have been testing it out all day today. recording levels are all spot on.
But then when played back sounds totally dreadfull. sounds really muffled.

so do i now need an external sound card?
or is there some setting to change on the laptop.

you'll have to get another soundcard mate.

You've got two options - a PCMCIA card, which plugs into the side of the laptop via the slot, or a USB one.

Both shouldn't set you back more than £30 and are about the same quality.

i've got a USB soundcard and it works a treat aswell as an MP3 recorder

Been out and got this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97120

line in is working fine through usb. levels are spot on .
but when u turn booth right down the green levels are still there at about half way.
so it must be picking sound up from where.
everything else is disabled, so what is happening here.

Im so close to putting my foot through this laptop.

Also, for when like a breakdown is on and a quiet part of the song.
really bad like a frequency sound, bad earthing sound, sounds like the old dial up connection on the internet.

    Edit-
Have managed to get rid of that noise, seemed to only be happeneing when the power lead was plugged into laptop.

But im still back to square one.

played a dics in the comp and the output through the sound card is perfect. Crystal clear

recording a line in and playing it back sounds dreadful.

doesnt matter what program i use to record its still exactly the same.
i dont think its got anything to do with the programs.
