    Stoning is a decent punishment

at the moment, people go to prison for nothing and often CHOOSE to commit crime for this reason, if the conditions/sentances were different, there would be different points at which people would be sent down.

if i was caught, got 10 lashes - fair enough - i'd take it probs never do it again.

there is crime in Turkey and everywhere else. there was more crime in victorian england than there is now. and they had hanging, flogging, deportation, foul prison conditions. They say you can tell everything about a society by looking at it's prisons. And you can't teach someone not to be violent by hitting them. Half the people in prisons are there because they are inadequate uneducated abused or stupid. It costs us all a fortune to keep them there and all that happens is they learn to be better criminals. when they get out nobody will employ them. It doesn't cut crime. And the constant cries for more vicious and harder sentences and conditions just panders to our desire for vengeance. Other countries in europe imprison far less than we do and their crime rates are no different to ours.

It's an absolute disgrace anywhere but particularly in so-called civilised countries.

Why is it always the same people who say they'd rather die than have their freedom taken who then say that capital punishment should be used instead of life imprisonment for the worst crimes?

Capital punishment is hypocritical. How can you say it is wrong to kill someone, and then kill them for doing it?

There is an old saying somewhere along the lines of; we are all criminals at some point in our lives, guilty of a crime that under other circumstances would have landed us in prison. ie. if we'd been caught.

This could be helping your m8's out by collecting a load of drugs to dish out to everyone at the after party or it could be driving over the speed limit to 'test' your new car out for a few seconds (it's a big laugh until someone steps out onto the road, or another driver cuts you off and you end up killing someone - then you're the scum of the earth for doing what many of us will risk ourselves)

I'm not saying that prison should be a laugh, just that laws don't necessarily sort out the good people from the bad.. it's all down to circumstance a lot of the time if you're talking about less serious offences.

I think that's true. In my wilder youth I was lucky not to get caught and sent to prison for stuff I was up to at the time. If I had been that would have been it for the rest of my life I guess. Luckily I didn't and was able to become the upstanding citizen I am now.
