They aren't routinely read by anyone. It's possible for each and every sms message to be read, but they aren't unless there's a good reason for it. The police can obtain the contents of any sms messages that have been sent if there's a possibility they could contain some evidence, for example.

I'm guessing there's some small print somewhere that lets consumers know this, but I'm betting you didn't read any small print before buying your mobile
