So i should decide now if i want to die, in advance of a debilitating illness i dont know im going to get perhaps in the future?

I dont think we should fuck about with trying to legislate around basic biological issues like these - It will be another nail in the coffin of the human race if we believe we can control people to the point where they can be kept artifically alive against their own free will.

They aren't the same though. One is deciding that (for example) it may be better for a very old lady with cancer to die peacefully rather than die naked with a load of people futilely electrocuting her, breaking her ribs and sticking needles in her groin - and you'd have to discuss it first. The other is actively intervening to end life and whilst I agree that there may be rare situations where this is the best course of action, you can't compare the two.

Ah but again this is different too I'm afraid - anyone sufficiently with it to make the decision can refuse any treatment they like, from artificial fluids upwards.

So whilst you certainly can't be kept alive artificially against your will (provided you can express it), it's not the same as being able to order someone else to kill you. If anyone does treat you against your will (which you can express in a letter written before you reach the point where you can't say it), then it's a criminal matter.

if i wanted to commit suicide i would. i wouldent need someone to help me - or make sure that i would kill myself before i would be unable to.

if i was a terminal patient i would spend 2 weeks getting in as much debt as possible - fly off to some mad country and throw myself off a cliff in front of the best view i could find :)

or just go to switzerland, they like that kinda stuff there

I think that's the point in needing someone to help you though so it makes your point quite redundant.

erm i never mentioned assissted suicide.

i said if someone in their right mind makes the choice not to live if they ever become in a position like that, that they should have the right to make the decision when they are of right mind.

and the reason its illegal is its attempted murder, be it to ones self but still, and lets face it it if you manage to kill yourself then the legal ramifications are a tad pointless.
