Speaking on behalf of the Promise Board Techno Purists Club this thread is shite...I was nearly linched by Yelloboy for trying to put a point across about what I seen as a techno DJ, that came from 8 years on a dancefloor in some of the best techno clubs in the world. I'm still right when I say picotto/fergie & co are gash long live Jeff Mills/Dave Clarke/Marco Corola/Marco Baily/Leibing/Rush/Sims/Umek and of course ME
i dont choose to listen to it, its when i look thru vinyl to find summic decent, everywhere you look its that crap.
im not a purist im the total opposite i like anything that sounds good, but getting a hard house bassline and throwing the sound of a couple of pots n pans over the top aint techno, its shit hard house lol
I agree m8, a few HH jocks were quick to jump on a few techno tues eg DK8. Techno became cool with Picotto, then Fergie tried to play it to get away from the HH label the had, the along comes scallywell who plays whatever he can lay his hand on first. Bringing techno into the mainstream has both good and bad points. call it what you will If it's good I dance...if it's shit I go the bar for another beer
when its played right i think its the best form of music out their alongside chunky prog. but it can also be played wrong and sound plain boring, if the dj manages to keep the energy going then its awesome
thats the difference between say Picotto and Leibing, leibing works the mixer and is creative in the mix, Picotto plays techno with straight forward 16 beat mixing and a few quick bass kills. techno is amazing when played the right way, any punk can beat mix...but not everyone can play techno well
yeh i suppose, im acually a fan of picotto tho, seen him play really well a couple of times, some class techno with evil basslines, but ive also seen the other side of him so i know what people mean when they call him boring
I'm a picotto fan (of his production work) but when you see him compared to Ben Sims, you would be to see Sims on 4 dex, cutting, scratching using efx and other mixing tools. Picotto puts a mix in, lights a tab, drinks his beer, Q's up another track.
yeh id love to see something like that, was looking forward to seeing dave clarke at global he was good, but not as good as i expected and nowhere near as good as hes played on some of the sets i had
you need to see the boys up close to appreciate their music, the efforts and skills involved are unreal
agreed it takes something special to make it on the techno scene, soem are lucky tho and do cross overs like picotto and fergie etc, altho saying that fergie done some ok scratching and that last time he played promise
