Use up more energy than your putting in, simple as that. i.e. eat less or do more exercise (cardio). Don't fall for those shitty fad diets. Oh and if your looking to build muscle protein is essential. Although you will will find it hard to lose weight and put on alot of muscle at the same time.

I trained 7 days a week doing just one muscle group per day except arms which i did twice a week. Got my arms up to 19" but alas a ruptured ligament and torn muscle has put paid to my training for awhile.

I go through phases of being really into the gym and then not going for months at a time. Really want to go back as I've always teetered on the edge of chubby bastard territory.

I could kick myself really because I keep promising and vowing that I will go back, even taking my gym bag to work so that I can workout afterwards.

But 75% of the time I end up heading straight home.

The money for my membership is coming out the account too every month. It's like I am handing away free cash based on being a lazy ass. Ironic since the gym is meant to make you less lazy and all like.

When I used to be into things more (five-six days a week of 40 minute cardio sessions) - Besides standard supplements (vitamin tablets, zinc, iron, glucosamine and fish oil) that I used on a morning, one thing I used at the beginning of my weight loss workouts was an ECA (Ephedrine*, Caffiene and Aspirin) stack and plenty of green tea instead of normal black tea with milk or coffee.

Usually about an hour, 45 minutes before exercising.

Switched to skimmed milk, enough vegetables and could do fine on three square meals a day - Excluding perhaps the odd protein bar here and now or a piece of fruit etc.

I used NLP techniques to reinforce the message of only eating when you're truly, truly hungry and didn't deny myself unhealthy shit from time to time - though as I exercised more I found myself not giving a shit about that sorta food anyway (chocolate etc) - People might laugh, but if you use Paul McKenna's CD to supplement exercise and a more concious approach to your weight loss regarding food - it does help.

I'd probably try a ketogenic/Atkins diet if I could afford lots of meat and protein filled foods that aren't so damned expensive.

I'll be forcing myself back to the gym like tomorrow...

Anyway, to cut my rambling short, the one thing I blame on being unable to maintain momentum is going out and getting wrecked. I always wake up the next day feeling like utter shite and the last thing I want to do is head for a gym.

But that has a knock on effect. I'm still feeling the effects of the last one from a fortnight gone. It's hard having an all or nothing mindset but then having friends who want to have expensive, excessive as fuck nights out that you feel for days after they've happened! :D

*Illegal in this country, though you can obtain this from certain medications you can buy in Boots - all you have to do is affect a cough and pretend you have asthma.
