I'm amazed that people see this as "gross", it's the best way of researching anatomy, physiology and medicine. Until a few hundred years ago, it was the only way of researching the way that the body worked. Doctors used to cut up the bodies of living theives/criminals and see how they worked. They used to do this in large open theatres and charge an entry fee too, and it was seen as a form of entertainment. It's strange that it was considered normal for this to happen maybe 300 years ago, and now it causes controversy.

The guy whose spinal chord/sciatic nerve was removed last night commited his body after death to Dr. Von Hagens, one of the most famous anatomists in Europe (although largely for his controversial antics), which I must respect him hugely for.

I enjoyed it last night anyway, and I think tonight's is on cardiac/circulatory/respiratory function, which will be even better.

Just because we can learn from it doesn't mean to say that some people wont be shocked by it. I'm all for science and people donating their body to this doctor. I tried to watch it because I thought it would be interesting. However I just couldn't stomach it...it was not for me. I have respect for Dr. Von Hagens- he's taken a scientific documentary to a whole new level... maybe even breaking the taboos of death?!

aye defo, my dad works for the NHS and he says that was nowt though. He told me i should smell burning flesh, or melena (half coagulated blood in your digestive system) or see someone with a flesh eating bug, or someone with CJD.

I wouldn't say I found the programme disturbing, controversial or anything, same as the Jerry Springer Opera, if you dont like it, don't watch it. Just made me watch with a morbid curiosity, as in "fucking hell i can't believe im seeing someone's skull being sawn off with an electric saw. I'll be watching it tonight like, i find the respiritory system very interesting (or since i did biology at college).

    ha ha!

We spent several hours a week in the dissecting room last year, and the smell is the thing that anatomy for beginners won't show you!

It's actually really interesting, but I've had some of the worst hangovers in my life surrounded by dead bodies

You see...I'm trying very hard to watch this and learn. The back of the head, the brain, the throat and back have been taken away. we can see how a bit of food passes through the body!

    NICE!

aye, i'm glad it was missing the smell... especially when it got to the bit opening the large intestine and he was like "ahhh some faeces from there last meal, let me scrap it out with my finger..."

i thought i'd be horrified - but it's actually not bad at all... Although last nights body was 'plasticinated' so looked fake - we'll see what tonights is like - the reproductive system... as long as he doesn't start carving up some poor blokes 'old man'
