Also, you could approach the manufacturers of the helmets, although the research wouldn't be as well regarded as if it was independently funded.

All 3 helmet providers in the UK have approached the NHS to work alongside them to do trials - but nothing has ever been approved.

In Scotland - a hospital in Glasgow has put forward a protocol to do a trial and hopefully this petition will help them get the funds they need. The Orthotists at Yorkhill Children's hospital have agreed to make the helmets.

    Fingers crossed!!!

Thanks for your interest and ideas by the way!

People are going to court left right and centre to get tamiflu and herceptin treatments for cancer.

Why should the NHS spend money on helmets for babies like Robbie over life-saving drugs like these?

Tamiflu - no evidence of increased survival.

Herceptin - one small study suggests it might help in the most advanced cases. Still awaiting the final trials to prove effectiveness.

You might as well argue that the NHS should stop correcting bat ears on girls, stop providing breast reconstruction for mastectomy patients etc.

Health benefit is measured in something called the quality-adjusted life year.

ie increased survival x quality of life.

I'd argue that 5 years of shit quality of life for a child at school with plagio treated with a helmet gives more quality adjusted life years than pronlonging a cancer patients life 3 months?

Though I don't have any research to prove it, you can't just dismiss the effect of cosmetics, especially in children.

Maybe those particular drugs are a bad example, but my point still stands.

Quoted before i deleted t. Darn

Anyway, do what joe suggested and read up on it. Kids grow so quick that it's all but disappeared by school age.

Next time i'm back in newcastle i'll post some of my baby pics in this thread. My head looked like two watermelons having a fight, but was fine by the time i got to about 5.

I've not signed the petition and i'm not going to. It's just some whinging personal crusade that pulls a few heart strings but will eventually amount to nothing. Plegiocephaly has been around for as long as there's been hospitals. The only people championing these helmets are people with personal experience like Claire, and the drug companies who make the things and will profit from their use.

Claire, the above's not meant to be harsh. I'm glad Robbie's getting on fine, but in all probability he would have been fine anyway and you'd be two grand beter off.

just to let you all know that the standard reply from the NHS with regards to plagio is

"it will grow out" "hair will grow in and cover the deformity"

I can assure you that the head does not sort itself in all cases. I did the baby show through in Glasgow at the beginning of March. We got signatures for petition and gave out lots of information. I must have looked at over 60 babies heads over the weekend with severe plagiocephaly.

I also looked at 8 CHILDRENS HEADS WHICH WERE SEVERELY DEFORMED AND THESE CHILDREN WERE AGED BETWEEN 7 AND 12. The NHS state that it will fix itself by the age of 5. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS TRUE!!!!

Also, there is a website on-line based in America but with members from all over the world. The website is a support group for people with unresolved plagiocephaly. There are adults on that site who are now severely depressed and some even suffer from agrophobia. Some children aged around 7 have had major surgery to fix their plagiocpehaly - this involves cracking open the skull and realigning it. A BIT HARSH DON'T YOU THINK WHEN IT CAN ALL BE FIXED BY THESE HELMETS WITHOUT ANY PAIN.

Another point is that these helmets could be produced by the NHS at a fraction of the cost that I paid. I reckon that orthotists could make the helmet for under £500. Then the baby only needs reviewed every 6 weeks for up to 6 months. I would say that this would prove cheaper than going to the operating theatre. Wouldn't you???

Again, if the NHS listen to points 1 and 2 on the petition and check babies at birth and 6 weeks for plagiocephaly. Then if present ensure that parents are advised on repositioning then this in turn should avoid the need for helmets in the majority of cases.

Babies' heads sound incredibly pliable. Which reminds me... there's a japanese website somewhere where they grow babies with their heads in weird shaped vases and jars so you can get babies with miniature heads and funny shapes. Actually the more i think about it, it might've been cats.

I don't understand how the helmet is so expensive? Why do they charge so much for just...well a helmet?

Yeah, i say just get a burst football, take the bladder out, and strap the casing on the baby's head. Fix it in place with some gaffer tape, and bob's your uncle.
