    Exactly.

Original christian and traditional black singing that later developed into gospel came from the cotten fields and plantations etc in america/carribean where slaves who were subject to many atrocities worked.

Soul, funk etc all take their roots from gospel... which as you said comes from the church. :)

It is positive, but it did stem from slavery and oppression originally. And house was born in backstreet clubs the gay and black communities went to wasn't it?

That was my point tho. I think we have our wires crossed.

Black music originated from a horrific era for black people, the fact it is largely positive and upbeat is a statement to the character of those people who lived and died.

Black music developed and grew under oppression, that is not my opinion, it is fact... I think we are arguing pretty much the same point.

Sounds to me like it was heavily influenced by white people, maybe we should call it white music

Haha controversy, how very apt for this thread! Seriously tho, the whites didn't develop it into what it became. Most white people at the time looked down on it.

@Mark - I agree, there are many other influences. Oppression was one and it was a major one that helped the music develop. I didn't mean it was the sole influence. There, I think we understand each other now! :D

seen as this seems to be the PC thread, i was jus wondering what people thought of a white or 'non black' person using the word nigga (not 'er') ?

my 2 cents is that i don't really get the point about all this pc shite, but thats not saying i'd go round an call people paki bastards or tell any1 from an ethnic minority to 'go back where they came from' (even tho alot of them are now 2nd/3rd/4th generation british now anyway  )

it think most people are ****s cos of how the act rather than their ethnicity

I am not saying the whites developed the sound but it was the white folks that were created the Oppression scene which you say created the black sound.

On the nigger tip, if a black man calls himself nigger, I'll call him nigger....

    Why shouldn't I?

He's not some god who I have to look up to, he's exactly the same as me - why should only black people be able to use a certain term?

I'll get slated off my fellow lefties for this stance. :D

(I do find the term highly offensive though, just don't see why a black man should be able to call himself nigger and a white man has to call him by a seperate name)

Fair enough... another thing for us to 'rightfully' claim as ours ;)
  19. Guest

Fat people take the piss out of each other though, but it's more offensive when a thin person does it. The word nigger was traditionally a term of abuse, so when used by white people i think it's more abusive.

Whipping those damn cotton-pickers made them what they are today, where's the gratitude?
