Xbox 360 playing AVI media/bigger hard disks

Can anyone tell me what exactly is the point in buying an xbox elite for the purpose of a huge hard disk (apart from the HDMI cable).

I don't want an Elite Vs. other xbox's debate here, the purpose of me asking is that I'm just unsure in what the selling point of the bigger hard disk actually is?

Is it going to be mainly for use with this new Xbox Live Market place or whatever, inwhich you'll be able to download movies to your xbox, or does it serve another purpose?

Which brings me to my next question. I wouldn't be downloading movies from Live Marketplace, as I get them free off the internet, so if I were to get an xbox 360 is there any way to play downloaded AVI media on a 360?

    Thanks x

Rossy you can connect your pc up with the x box with mediacenter. Ive done that and most my videos and music work fine through that.

You can play HD wmv movies off the xbox360 but I don't think you need the bigger HD for it, just burn them to DVD.

I'm sure i read that MS are starting up a hi def tv show / movie service early next year though and they're starting to put full game downloads on too
I normaly just stream movies using connect 360.

I've still got 90 gb+ of the elite HDD free so not really needed it as yet

Am I missing the point of connecting your xbox to your pc just to watch a movie?

Why not just watch it on the pc?

you can wirelessly stream movies from ur pc to xbox, watching an HD movie off ur pc's Hard Disk on the nice TV downstairs... saves the hassle of burning to disk etc!

only gripe i have with it is the fact it doesnt care for avi files. but that's easily fixed with a dashboard update should microsoft choose to play nice...

There's a program that converts avi to wmv for streaming - It's a windows program so I've not used it but it's meant to work pretty well.

I think it's called TVersity although I don't know what the transcoded quality is like

Why dont you stick to xbox media centre? I do, cant be arsed with sorting it on the 360, xbmc plays much different codec variations etc (plus you can watch a tv stream from vlc media player on it) does this mean your getting a 360? We can play halo 3 together  on a separate note Nass will you accept my friend request on live its only been 3 months!

I will be, for AVI's. Fancy trying some high definition through the 360 though.

I nearly got one on Friday Scotty, with Halo 3. Bateys mate in gamestation was trying to con me though, trying to say they all had the new 65nm CPU chip (which makes it quieter and less prone to problems).

Seeing as I'd been reading about it all on xbox scene that day, I told him that wasn't true as it was only the Halo 3 Limited Edition xboxes with a certain serial number, then made batey go round the back and check them all. :)
