    Worst Promise Ever?

Last night was by some distance the worst Promise ever. I walk in at 10ish to hear hard trance being blasted out the speakers. I had to check my watch because it sounded like it was 330am. :(

O'Bir calmed it down slightly and played an ok set. Nowhere near as good as last time though. Tulip was poor. Ornadel was poor. Just bashed out the hardest records they could find in their box. :(

I have loved going to Promise these last 3 years, but that was just horrible. Left at 230, couldnt stand it anymore.

I know il be one of the few people who think this and im sure il get slated, but i think it needed to be said.

Also i happen to think Foster, O'Bir, Tulip and Ornadel are all excellent djs, and i have enjoyed many sets from them all. But last night wasnt music, it was just noise. Is that the new Promise direction? To just blast it out hard from the very start of the night?

You might as well have just called that night "Quality", because as i see it there is very little distinction between the two.

This year so far i have had the pleasure of seeing John 00 Fleming, PVD, Sasha, Tiesto, Picotto, Timo Maas, Corvin, Les Hemstock So to have to listen to THAT last nite was horrible on the ears.

Then again, mebbes im just a miserable old git? :p

    Hard isn't for everybody

Not all people like it hard, nothing wrong with that Orbit. Though you mentioned Picotto ;)

I liked last night, but the harder the music, the better for me. I didn't get in there till after 11 so I can't comment on the earlier parts of the night.

i hate it when he night doesnt build....

if a nights open till 4, then it should be prog / prog trance till at least 12 - 1, especially if its a trance night.

I agree in some ways, not a fan of hard, keep it floaty please! but how can you say that o'bir and ornadel were poor? The start and finish of Ornadels set were immense, how can you call tracks like the new remix of binary finary, new remix of carte blanche, y traxx - mysteryland and gabriel and dresden hard???
Jon o bir was anythin but hard, and he was class!!!! loved his set (as i always do) 5th dimention is about as soft as trance can get really!(and as good) he played loads of soft stuff! However Scott was awful, they should finish off with a floaty DJ cause u dont wanna be stomping away @ 4 in the mornin! its jst too much after 7 hours of bein on the dance floor!

fair enough, get rid of hard....and the night was too hard, but no way was jon o bir hard (or average) and ornadel was prety immense too imo.

I wasn't there last night so suck me sideways if I say something profound...

What has been said in this thread denotes a degree of inconsistencey with Promise.

I remember the early days of my Promise virginity, first night was a trance classics night; I cried about eighteen times between 12 and 2, the closing time. The muzik was so lush and reminded me of the days when I was 16 and looked little over 12, so nights out at weekends were far from the agenda. I would sit in and listen to Jules and Tong. Gouryella is my best memory of this.

A few weeks after my first night at Promise it was the 2nd birthday and Picotto was on. He is still a legend for me today and has withstood the test of time, as everyone will agree I'm sure. However, that night I wanted to curl up in the corner and die by 1am but the music was too loud. Or rather too hard. Reason being is because it was too hard for too long. I love more or less every style of music which is why I am desperate to see Sasha, yet I was listening to Frank Sinatra tonight. At the same time I have bought Nukleuz Hard Beats EP 22 on vinyl today. Maybe it was just the way I was then, since I am more for hard choons these days, I don't know.

I think it was about six months ago when M.I.K.E. and Joy Kitikonti were on at Promise and I went in the mood for hard stuff and thought Joy would most definitely be hard. Smack my bitch up if it wasn't trance for the majority of the night!! Don't get me wrong, it was lush trance and brought me to tears a couple of times, but blood was pumping through my arms and I just wanted to let the energy out.

As for remixes of Veracocha and Y Traxx - I think the classic choons should be left alone, Cafe del Mar was better left alone. it makes it a bit more special when you drop it in a set. It also makes you feel better to have a rare track on vinyl, I've just paid £30 for BBE - Seven Days and One Week. Call me silly but I love it.

    Jx

I enjoyed all the sets apart from Scot Project's. With hard trance, all the tracks sound near enough identical with that try-too-hard bassline in every single track.

Until last night though, I thought I was going off Trance a bit. I'm not. I like nearly every dance genre out there at the minute which is good. Jon O Bir played Cosmicman - Krystal Dreams for me . What a guy. Was some good other stuff being played too by the rest!

    Re: Re: Worst Promise Ever?

Mark> i didn't go on friday so not asking about that, but just out of curiousity, what in your opinion was the worst Promise ever? either one that was a failure or just one you didn't enjoy. I'm not saying there's ever been a really shit one, just wondering what you think.
