    Wireless Setup Query...

Ok so I setup a wireless router/printer network for a friend.

They have one standalone desktop pc in the computer room with the router attached and wireless printer.

They also have a wireless laptop which they want to use anywhere in the house.

I set it all up it works the laptop was in the kitchen that connected fine and printed ok. Days later they say the laptop wont connect in the lounge so went round and discovered that their computer room is actually in an old coal shed!
And the partition wall to the rest of the house is about 3 ft thick theres no wireless signal going thru at all!

    I have 2 options...

    1) I can move the router to the lounge and hardwire the desktop in then the laptop will work rest of the house but the wireless printer would need moving too. (Cheap option)

    2) Buy a wireless signal booster or another aerial to either try get the signal thru the wall or bounce it round the wall via the kitchen to rest of house. (more expensive)

There lies my problem because I have no idea how good boosters are or if this would work? So any1 used one before?

    And advice please....

(I've also attched a plan so you can see the issue :D )

shift the router - i had similar problems, internal stud walls are ok, soon as it hits supporting walls and external walls it'll be flakey to say the least

Also, have the router placed as high as possible

people buy all this kit assuming it will work cos their 'friends' does!!

But they forget that their friends live in a Barratts house which has tissue paper walls and their wireless network would feed the street given the chance.

Older houses bit more interesting!

some routers are better than other, some have stronger signals than others - but it's all trial and error - what will work for someone, won't for others.

    my experience :

linksys - shite (division of cisco? bollocks)
    netgear - canny good!
belkin - equally canny good - and a bargain!
