mines really reliable, only drops signal, once every few weeks maybe less.

Most wireless routers have a firewall, guess you could class that as a hardware firewall.

    I have a belkin router.

Think the reliabilty can be affected by how far away from the hub you are.

the modem/router will be on the next floor down and a bit to the back so were talking about 7 metres through a brick wall and floor

I used to have a linksys BEFSWsomethingorother (technical term alert)

which was a 54mbps (although I only had 11mbps centrino on my laptop

It was chuffing excellent - my mam and dad live in a large victorian house that has really thick brick walls throughout, The PC was at the front of the house downstairs, and I could use it about 15-20 metres away, even in the back yard outside with full signal strength.

It was pretty easy to set up on both sides too, and because I had a couple of problems setting up my laptop to find it, the linksys team I contacted on the web chat thing were really helpful and sorted it all out for me. :)

You can't really go wrong with either belkin or linksys really, both well known reliable makes so  good luck :)
