wireless router / modem right... to be honest im not really THAT familiar with wireless gubbins, in fact i know a great load of FA about it... and im about to prove that... right. i want broadband. my rents dont want another line trailed through the house from downstairs. ive been looking at these wireless router / adsl modem jobbies, and i have a few questions about em. it would only be used for one machine, im the only person who uses a system in the house, but my idea is basically, if i connect a wireless modem / router to my phone line downstairs, does that mean i could use the net connection on my machine upstairs, without the need for cables all over the place? ive been informed that THIS is a good one to go for... anyway... any help is much appriciated, this wireless stuff is all news to me.
Why not just get the standard modem from ur broadband company, then a RJ45 to WiFi adapter and a WiFi card for ur pc? Should be cheaper. Note: I have set wireless networking segments up at work plenty of times, but I have not done this precise operation before, so no guarauntees
im thinking i might buy one of those modem / router jobs anyway instead of the free one... that belkin one has NAT and SPI firewalls, and all the write up's ive read are spot on.. whereas the modems that come supplied with the companies i have read dont quite have the same 'glowing' references. save some cash on the stup n stuff as well naturally if i get my own modem... and there's a chance that in future i could have a use for the wireless router when i move out, so i think it's got the winning verdict
spud - dont bother with expensive stuff m8. www.ebuyer.co.uk get their own branded wireless router. 11mbs - that will do ya for home. only cheap as well <£30 a think..
now ya see... lookin at this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=55543&offset=20 and reading reviews has confused me again... if i bought that adsl modem / router, plugged it into my foneline downstairs, and stuck a wireless network card into my pc (upstairs), do i not need a system downstairs to plug into the router directly? the comments on those pages has thrown me... ach, new fangled gubbins.
yeh, been chattin to bri on msn, found those same things, just gotta see if my line will actually work with Broadband now... guess i may as well explain the situation here as well... my line was split when i had a second line added... im informed that broadband does not like line splits - im hopin that just having the second line cancelled will make it ok...
