wireless networking got a cable modem and currently connect using network card on laptop. i want to go wireless but am a little stuck... advice/recomendations
Re: wireless networking you'll need a wireless access point/hub to plug the cable modem into then a suitable wi fi network card for your laptop. Not too sure of the exact details cause i'm not 100% on bluetooth and WiFi type products. One of the sales gimps at PCWorld will be able to point you in the right direction, then go buy it elsewhere. looking at about £100 i reckon. maybe. rough guess.
You need a wireless access point, and then a wireless pc card for your laptop. The cable modem pugs into the access point via ethernet cable, then a bit of tweaking and you should be good to go. Buy the stuff from www.ebuyer.com - you should be able to pick up a wireless card and an access point for no more than 100 quid all in. You'll be able to use this with other pc's and laptops if you have them around too.
G is the fastest - get that Ive been on Telewest and now im on NTL - so i know they give you combination USB/Ethernet modems Juski
bluetooth is slow and useless - dont bother with it. Its taken ages to take off, and now it has... its obsolete.
Ok, I'm an IT and Systems Admin during the 9 to 5, so you can trust me U want 802.11B WiFi cards (whether PCI or PCMCIA depending on what is available. Use DLink as they are cheap and nasty, thats all you need for a small SS. U want a Broadband Router/Access Point from Belkin to share the connection. Make sure you use WEP encryption and MAC authentication. A 2003 server would be nice too but perhaps somewhat overkill Edit: A is shit, G is over expensive and overcaps ur connection so useless waste of money not to mention signal strength problems meaning it usually has to default back to the B protocol, Bluetooth over 2+ comps will reduce bandwidth = ballz. So 802.11b is the protocol of choice: Cisco if yer rich, DLink if you arent.
this board it full of IT geeks.... i'm one, spence is (soz chief) , brid seems to know his stuff, juski is, but keeps quiet now, trying to bury his urge to give out gems of IT info... give in son, u know u wanna... trust us all.
He's a techie - dont worry about it As long as you have a decent software firewall on your pc your good to go - the stuff he mentioned is a safeguard against other people in the vicinity jumping on your wireless network and doing naughty things.. ... but im assuming you dont live near people who would have the time, motivation.. and most importantly the means to do that.
http://www.dabs.com/UK/productview?quicklinx=2PW7 what you think of this? just to be used for me laptop...
seems like that will be fine, wont be all that secure but for home use i guess that isnt a big issue! do you just have the one laptop in your house? IE is there only one machine in your house that you use for the net?
so just as a matter of interest......why ya wanna go wireless? seems like alot of expense when ya only got one machine on the net!
i thought that wireless networks were a bit pants in their current stage of infancy? that the cards were really flimsy an the like? but then again i know fukk all bout comps so i think i'll shut up now..
