    Wireless Network (again)

I was having problems with my old cheap origo wireless modem/router, and having read around, found that (in particular) it had issues with steam (valve's content delivery service) and that was what was killing it. it also appeared to be 'unfixable'.

fair play, i couldnt grumble, it was cheap in router terms so i ordered a new 3com one (as i have always been assured that these are very good).

set it up on the laptop downstairs, all is well, the connection is noticably faster, the WEP actually works, all seems well and good.

    however....

I come to connect on my main system, (which it manages comfortably) however, it is dropping the connection like - once every couple of minutes?

the only thing i can think of is (again) the cheap origo wireless cards i have in the two desktops, as the laptop (with a 54g belkin pcmcia card) has no issues...

does this sound about right, im understandably miffed at the prospect of spending EVEN MORE to make this damn thing finally be good... the laptop appears to have achieved this... at least one out of three is right

    help

having done some more 'investigation' - the wireless is on and off all the time anyway, but attempting to connect to steam just throws it entirely, and kills it stone dead...

im thinkin possibly buy one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=59778

scrap the cheap pci card i currently have and hope to god that this thing solves the issue...

any comments are appriciated, in my mind thats all i can think to be the issue, but i would far rather be proved wrong than spend more money i dont really have! :p

    hmmm...

The origo cards would be the problem I'd imagine.

I've got a belkin USB 54g adapter for my PC, and my laptop has an Origo 802.11b adapter (I'm using a WAG54G Linksys router).

The PC is solid as a rock (and I use it to play CS via steam ;))

However, the laptop drops the connection regularly and can't be used for more than about half an hour before it drops, even when it's virtually ON TOP of the router.

Something else to check for: make sure you haven't got your router broadcasting in G(54mbps) and B(11mbps) modes (if it supports both). Change it to G or B only, depending on the slowest network adapter you have in the house (the G adapters are backwards compatible and will work with 802.11B).

and BTW - the Belkin wireless adapter I'm using is available at dixons for £20

I use a linksys wireless router and a linksys wireless g pcmcia card for my lappy and its never dropped a connection !!

I know this isnt a very clever or technical answer but when i was reading up on getting those bits all reviews pointed at matching the brands of the router to the network cards for best compatability !!!

Also from wot i read linksys is one of the best and most reliable brands !!

You don't have to match the gear to get it to work, you just have to buy decent equipment.

Linksys, 3com, or Belkin (and Orinoco for laptops) = Good

Netgear = don't know, never used it.

Anything else or a no-name product = Bad

You can mix and match as you like, as long as it's not cheap + nasty it all should work.
