    Wireless broadband

My computer has been moved to the dining room and the dangling cables are proving to be shit. My mam has suggested we get some wireless stuff but i'm in the dark here.

What do I buy? I'm confused how it works cos my m8 seems to be picking up his neighbours internet through his wireless network. I thought u had to have a wireless modem to do that.

Anyone care to enlighten me with a fairly simple, effective wireless internet setup?

    Re: Wireless broadband

haha i had all this bother awhile back. proper nightmare.
do you have a computer or laptop? just some of the newer version laptops have built in wireless, if not you need to but an adaptor, that'll be how your friend is picking up someone elses.
you also need a modem/router. basically that plugs into your phoneline, but your phone can still be connected, and that sends a signal around your house, which can be picked up by your adaptor. as for models of router, adaptor etc i couldnt tell you whats best and cheapest and where. someone else might be able to. it might be worth getting in touch with your broadband provider to see if theres anything they can offer you

I remember some thread a month ago or so about someone who bought a new router or modem and the signal was piss piss poor. Who was this unlucky sod? Any any reccommendations on hardware? I notice some of the wireless cards have a speed booster. At what point do these become a neccessity?

    Thanks rachel and lee. :)

    That would be me.

It was some miniscule linksys affair, and it was shocking.

We now have a 90 quid Belkin making us all glow in the dark, and, more importantly, getting internet on the top floor.

Hang on, you suggested i get a linksys router/card but you had an issue with them? I'm not blessed with amazing luck when it comes to computers so i don't want to be falling into the same trap as u!

I'm having a quick look on ebuyer atm and they have bundle offers on stuff. Whats this "usb adaptor" all about? I don't understand what it's for.

I've found this bundle but it says "Cost-effective High-Speed Wireless ADSL2+ Gateway for SOHO Networks" http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/108148 Whats a SOHO network?

I don't know if i'd risk buying that though seeing as its a name i've never heard of..

usb adapters can be used in your PC - it's just like a wireless card in a laptop - it's used to connect to your wireless router.

The reason your friend was getting his neighbours signal is because he was in range and the connection was not encrypted.

Encryption can be a bit touch and go with wireless, I personally don't bother with it, I just restrict the access to my pc only via alternate, simpler means.

Stick with Belkin or Linksys, stay away from Netgear.

You can't really go wrong with it!

Ok. I'll keep that in mind. I'm just concerned about the Linkys problem Andy had. I don't want to get the same results. I can hardly afford this to start with.
