wireless broadband got mine through and set it up last night but had to do it manually coz it wouldnt work, anyway ive had to set my wireless up so that it hasnt got a wep key and password, meaning it isnt quite a secure connection, however the bloke from aol said it should be ok because i live in a house and not a flat, just wondering tho, how easy is it for other people to access it? can anyone get my information from it, say if i was to use my bank details online? all help appreciated please. thankenyou
That is some shocking advice you've been given. You can pick up wireless on the other side of the street (provided the person has a decent router) and you need to encrypt it with WEP a) to stop people stealing your internet b) to stop them stealing your data It's unlikely they'd get your credit card or anything, but it's common sense to get it sorted Use a decent password on your router settings as well.
Re: wireless broadband House next door could pick up your broadband and access the net for free if u havent got a wep key , or someone could sit in a car outside your house with a laptop and access the net for free , i doubt anyone would sit and log everything u do online altho it is possible !!!! Why wudnt the wep key set up ??
Re: Re: wireless broadband i havent got a clue bloke had to talk me through it over the fun. anyone know how to set it up? (in baby language tho coz im useless!) and the people at aol arent much better than me! haha
Re: Re: Re: wireless broadband U tried the step by step on the cd that came with it ?? When u say wouldnt work , wot actually wouldnt work ??
Re: Re: Re: Re: wireless broadband i put in the cd to set up the router step by step and it wouldnt work so i had to do it manually over the phone, then i couldnt get the wireless adapter to connect to the router so had to do that over the phone manually aswell. and he said not to worry about the wep key, but its been playing on my mind
sat in my car one day connected to some random wireless broadband on my laptop accessed all the there detail found there address and it was 2 streets away thats how secure it is.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: wireless broadband have u tried the cd again ?? now that its been set up manually the cd mite work no probs now ?? I had a right clart on with one of my m8's wireless a while back and had to set it up manually , then thru the cd for the wep key etc , then do an ip config / release / renew before it would work !! if the wireless goes down when re trying the cd do u have another pc/laptop hardwired to still be able to access the net ??
fuck the cd, you need to go in to the router setup page, type in your default gateway into the url on your internet browser. If you don't know what you default gateway is, go to command prompt and type ipconfig it will appear, it'll be something lke 192.168.2.1. when you type this in the router page should appear and it will haveyour encrytion setup stuff on that.
tried that and it wont work ive typed in all the correct codes etc on the router page etc and its fine, but then when i try to log onto the wireless network, i put my keycode in etc, works fine, yet when it connects it says it has limited availablity, no signal
WEP is a bare minimum as a form of security. A word of advice: if possible, don't use WEP. I could sit outside your house tonight with my laptop and it would take about 20 minutes to crack. From that I could see any information travelling between your computer or router, or use your internet for free. Without WEP or WPA, anyone could do the above. Noone in consett is likely to do this to you just yet, but as these things get more popular and more available its only a matter of time before people start trying. Use WPA-PSK (Pre-shared Key) if possible, and make sure your passphrase is over twenty characters long to prevent anyone using guessing software to get the right combination (this explains why): Run through the router setup again, and use WEP or WPA if possible. Enter the same WEP/WPA passphrase on the router and the PC and it should work. I live in shotley, so if you want a hand setting it up I'd be willing to do it for you.
Ruth brought her laptop round to my house not long after she got it and managed to pick up someones broadband. Most of the people in Consett wouldn't have the brains to be able to get your details but it's not worth the risk imo.
just went to connect to my wirless network and realised that ive managed to pick someone elses in the area up aswell, they've got theres wep coded though. so surely this means that if i can see theres, they can access mine?
eventually got it sorted last night after an hour on the phone might i add they wouldnt let me use the wpa code instead of wep though, as they said that they dont support that facility or give advice on it
if you want me to sort out wpa for you let me know. Si, it's easy done, all you need is a wireless card supported by linux and a copy of airsnort or kismet (all of which I have )
