    Windows XP or Win2k

I'm sick and tired of windows xp getting bogged down after a few programs have been installed. Stuff takes longer to open/close than it should, shutting down sometimes results in the shut down screen staying on forever blah blah blah.

I'm either going to format and reinstall xp (again) or give win2k a whirl.

What do u reckon? I don't play games cos my graphics card broke so i'm using a shitty geforce2gts now. Watching video, listening to music, downloading, burning cd/dvd's, chatting on msn, browsing a fe websites is all i use it for.

As a safety note, is there anything i'll need to make sure i have on disk before installing win2k cos I'm used to XP auto-installing a lot of things by default.

Stick with XP, you'll start running into compatibility problems with drivers and software with 2000. If you can get hold of an XP disc with SP2 and all current updates (or as up to date as possible), get nLite from http://www.nliteos.com/ and use it to remove anything you don't want from Windows before you install it. Also, after you install programs, go to start-->run-->msconfig and check they haven't added themselves to startup. Both those things will keep XP lean.

    Or try linux. :D

haha i'd never try linux. I've heard it's not for stupid heads like me.

I was going to give n-lite a try but i thought it would be aimed more towards people who know a lot about the different things in XP. Like for example, certain things that shouldn't be removed because other programs rely on them. Is it just a case of removing loads of obvious things that come pre-installed with a normal windows? I think i'm down to my last cd-r so i hope so

    As for a windows with pre-installed SP2 :( I had one but I think it's gone.

Nah, linux has got (relatively) very easy to use in the last couple of years - you should try dual-booting with Ubuntu or Fedora Core, both distros have excellent community support and tutorials, and you'll almost only be using the command line when someone tells you what to put in it. :)

nLite isn't hard to use at all, most stuff for de-/selection is pretty self-explanatory and obvious, a quick Google will sort out anything else.

Hunt round for XP with SP2 pre-installed, if you add it after (plus with other updates) it will bloat it.

I've just noticed a 'Windows XP SP2 Student Release'

Is this new? I've never heard of it. If so, any pros and cons you know of?

It's XP Professional with a student license, is cheaper to buy than normal XP Pro. There's no difference in the OS afaik, so go for it :)
