Windows Protection Error I am in a scathing rage today 'cos my PC's fooked  Running Windows 98SE, been having a lot of blue screens recently concerning virtual device drivers (.vxd) when starting up. It started getting really bad so ran the Norton version of scandisk (thorough) cos I suspect the hard drive has got some bad sectors but Explorer crashed half-way thru. Restarted PC but now it starts loading windows, then loads some of the .vxd's (mouse, keyboard, etc), then a blank screen comes up with 'Windows Protection Error, you must restart your computer'. It won't go past that screen (it will in safe mode but as far as I can tell there's fuck-all I can do in that to rectify this problem). Any idea's? Cheers in advance
run scandisk thru throughly to mark all the dodgy sectors so they're not used again. run it either in safe mode or from a nice dos boot disk, with the additional switches.
Problem is that there were hundreds of different .vxd's that were popping up on the blue screens, there was only a couple of recurring ones like vmm32.vxd, etc. If they were over bad sectors, I don't know how many scandisk managed to shift (and corrupt) b4 the bastard died. I do reckon the disk is about to die like tho'. Had over five years of porn abuse, so it's had a good innings. Gonna try putting in another hard disk, whacking windows onto that, then try to retrieve as much as poss. New PC time methinks... @ Juski and ManofScience - Thankyou!
