    Windows 7 Advice

Since i've had literally zero problems at all with W7 so far, coming off the back of vista - i decided to then just do away with vista and upgrade instead of a clean install.

    DO NOT DO THIS.

It took literally hours to install due to all the files being kept, and after all of the waiting it decided not to work properly. couldent hack it at all, hardly would run and was full of errors. this resulted in me spending further hours backing stuff up and finally doing a fresh install (which is arguably what i should of done in the first place.)

however a fresh install takes less than half an hour and then your away... wayhey.

that is all. much strife had this evening :(

I've never had this problem as I don't use vista :)

Clean install is always the way to go. Upgrades sometimes introduce complications and glitches to a machine that you wouldn't get if you just did a clean install (Windows 98 & ME were appalling for this).

i added the rc to a spare drive and have been using it recently - i cant wait for the full release to be honest. i wish there was a way to upgrade from the rc to the full version, but with that not being an option, im reluctant to moving over completely to w7 just yet. roll on october  :)

yeah, when i initially upgraded the OS, there was a plethora of glitches - the desktop wouldnt load properly, the network card wouldent initialise properly, there was a stream of error messeges and it just wouldent work at all.

of course, i'm blaming the absolute shamble that is vista

after the fresh install, everything's working 100%, no errors, nada.

    champion.

yeah, i got 7 on the laptop but i'm sticking with Vista on the home PC till the official release is out - i'll get a legit copy thru work in Oct. not putting the release candidate on my main PC , even if a hack does come out to make it last longer. doesn't matter on the laptop as it's just browsing/VJing/support stuff i use it for, easily rebuilt if need be

aye, the move was simply down to the built up annoyance of vista, and i really didnt want to downgrade back to XP because i'm so used to the flashy niceness of the next gen Windows platform

however the RC hasnt posed any problems at all, and i've been using it since it was released, i'm definatly going to buy it when it comes out - however downgrading from ultimate might be hard going :(

thank god there is a script to take off the 'evaluation copy' watermark in the corner of the screen!

Someone advise me in the ways of W7. I haven't kept up to date at all. Is it released? What are the useful advantages over Vista? I've had no problems with Vista tbh.. prefer it to XP any day.

Released to public in OCT, RTM probably july.

it's nicer, quicker, runs better on slow spec machines. Better straight out of the box, re-designed task bar. networking sorted out, backwards compatability much more stable. it's what Vista should have been.

Ok, so it's not in Beta stages with various bugs and/or loads of programs unsupported?

Are vista programs all compatible with W7? I'm in desperate need of a hdd format so might give this a whirl when I do so.

Not sure when that will be though since I need to backup 300GB of files and only have dvd-r's and no money :(

the beta was a bit funny with drivers, the Release Candidate is out at the moment which is spot on. However, it's time limited till June next year. if you re-build your PC often, then thats probably fine but i've only put it on my laptop for now - but it works great

Yeah im running it full time on my laptop.

The first (7100) RC version had flickering isues, but the next version i stuck on there (upgraded to 7126) sorted it all out.

Im running a macbook with 2gb ram and dual core 2.0. Its very very nippy.

Tis a very good OS.. looks like they may be on form this time.

I had it for a while but had issues with my Sound Card so reverted back to Vista.

I will be gettin this tho. without a doubt.
Dunno where ppl get the quick install from tho.. cos it took ages on my machine (i7 920 @ 3.6Ghz..)
