    Who go? Viana (sorry!)

Lisbon giants Sporting have won the race to sign Hugo Viana on a season-long loan from Newcastle United.

Viana has struggled to adapt to life in The Premiership following his move from Sporting in the summer of 2002 and had been seeking a move away from St James' Park for some time.

Magpies chief Sir Bobby Robson had initially been reluctant to allow the young midfielder to move on, but he has now sanctioned the loan deal.

"I am very happy to return to Portugal and be back at Sporting," said Viana.

"Today is a happy day for me. It was important for me to return to a club that I know well.

"Newcastle continue to hold my contract, but at the moment all I want to think about is working hard for Sporting."

Viana will complete the formalities of his move to Jose Alvalade Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, after passing the obligatory medical
