Is this the worst journalism ever then ????? Celtic defender is next target Jul 16 2004 By The Evening Chronicle Sunderland are believed to be lining up a move for Scotland international left back Stephen Crainey. The word in Scotland is that the 23-year-old Celtic defender could join the Black Cats on loan in the next few days. Crainey scored on his debut for Celtic in November 2000 and last season spent the final three months of the campaign on loan at Premiership Southampton. Sunderland already have good cover at left back, with both George McCartney and Julio Arca impressing there last season. But McCartney can also play at centre-back and Arca was used mainly on the left wing last season, so the addition of Crainey as a dedicated left back makes sense. Sunderland are also keeping their fingers crossed that Arca will sign a new contract at the club because he is in the last year of his current deal, although the signs are that the Argentinian crowd favourite will commit his future to the Wearsiders. Meanwhile, Sunderland were today waiting for Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly to make up his mind whether his future lies on Wearside or in the East Midlands. The Black Cats confirmed yesterday that they had had an 11th hour bid accepted by Connolly's club West Ham, just when it seemed he was poised to join Leicester City. Leicester have also had a bid - believed to be in the region of £500,000 - accepted by the Hammers and the 27-year-old was at the Walkers Stadium undergoing a medical when Sunderland put in a higher offer and were granted permission to speak to the player. Sunderland chairman Bob Murray says the decision now lies with Connolly. Murray said: "We made an offer to West Ham while the player was at Leicester having his medical and that was accepted as it was a superior bid. "We are now in discussions with the player and his agent and the final decision lies with David." West Ham boss Alan Pardew added: "I can confirm that I have agreed to let David have talks with Sunderland and Leicester City. "A fee has been agreed for his transfer and now the decision is up to him." Sunderland are confident that Connolly will choose a switch to Wearside, with Mick McCarthy knowing the player well from the Republic of Ireland set-up, where he gave him his international debut. McCarthy tried to sign him last summer when he left Wimbledon but at that time West Ham were able to offer him a better deal to move to London. But, even though Sunderland must now be favourites, Leicester director of football Dave Bassett is still clinging onto the hope that the Foxes' will land Connolly. He said: "We're still waiting for that to be completed. It's close. "David is tying up a couple of things at West Ham _ and when that is sorted he will sign."
They say it was a loan deal, maybe it was but I thought it was a transfer Look: http://www.saintsworld.net/scrainey.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southampton/3446355.stm
