What qualities could your average soldier bring to our education system

That should put them ahead of your average person?

The way that our military is unconditionally praised in this country is really quite worrying. Apparently my dads friend was getting quite patriotic and on the verge of crying yesterday, because the government are decommissioning a warship.

Human kind are one strange bunch.

Its a shame its almost getting to the point where people treat you like you are committing high treason if you dare say anything about the armed forces.

People are being manipulated with the constant heart string tugging that is done upon them, through music, media and entertainment. Song lyrics, fashions, tv shows, films etc etc - its all a constant drip feed.

I doubt the average thick fucker on the street would even be able to tell us WHY we are occupying Afghanistan and Iraq these days. All they know is our armed forces = HEROS (No matter how many atrocities and other shady activities you hear about).

    The armed forces are heroes.

On the flip side, all politicians are career criminals ;)

Being serious for a minute - I don't see the point in what's being proposed. Being a soldier doesn't make you a good teacher.

What, even the ones who torture innocent people or kill civilians?

Im pretty sure the 'insurgents' (or 'FREEDOM FIGHTERS' as they are usually known in their own country) are regarded as heroes by many people as well.

War is a fucking ugly thing, and more ugly when its illegal at that. I think a balanced perspective is very important in this day and age, to stop us all going over the tipping point where we cant entertain the idea that there are times when we are in the wrong, or act in an intolerant manner to people who arent quite as emotional about the whole thing.

(Yes, i've lost family in previous wars, and have military heritage. So I'm able to comment ;) )

I was being flippant more than anything else.

Being a soldier is a job, nothing more. I suspect the mass-respect for them comes from the WW era and those who read the red-top national press (who are always shoving the "our boys/our brave lads" lines in people's faces).

The army is just the same as any other career or profession - there are some who do it well, some who are shit, and those who take advantage or abuse the system. Only problem in this case is that people's lives are irreversibly affected, altered, or extinguished as a result of their actions.

Just like in any profession, blame the people at the top who make the orders when it goes wrong

I agree with Conway. Some of the guys out there are heroes, the reason for them being there may not be worthy of praise though - blame the politicians. I certainly wouldnt want to be out there fighting.

Following on from Brids note though, yes you cant really call the ones that are torturing people heroes, but I have to say are we really shocked that this sort of thing goes on? These guys are taught to hate the enemy and kill, no wonder some of them go bad

The heroism comes from the point of view they are putting their life on the line fighting for their country. Don't confuse that with the legalities or morals of the country wars

in answer to Rosssi off the internets original question they will bring all the qualities that the Tories wish to instill in our children.
    1- unquestioning following of orders.
2 -no questioning of those in authority.
3 -violence when ordered, passivity otherwise.
4 -rote learning of the wisdom of the ancients. no creativity, no asking questions or being an individual.
5 -wearing uniforms and thinking that's a good thing.
6 - protecting the rich against the poor
7 -hating the hun, the Japs, the ragheads and (soon to be announced) the Chinks or whoever those in power think are in the way of bigger profits
8 -washing behind the ears and shiny shoes
9 - sucking up to teacher

Micheal Gove is a nasty little fucker who was probably arse raped at his public school. Repeatedly.

    I thought we had a Tory/Libdem coalition? no? ;)

Clegg is doing a great job of going back on every single election promise they ever made. So between Labour sending us back to the 70's, the tories putting everyone out of work, and the Lib Dems being as useless and unelectable as they have always been ........ looks like we are once again at the point where you can't trust any of them AT ALL.

Back on track though. This looks like some USA type 'be a soldier and we will fast track your education afterwards' type thing, but all it looks like right now is a generation of kids who will be educated by people more used to stacking middle eastern folk in pyramids while beating their genitals with knotted ropes and waterboarding innocent people.

I'm off to get myself sterilized.

I got a boy in this shitty system now. it is all very real to me. if he survives school and the £30000 debt when he comes out of university there will only be the army still taking people on, cos they have a consistent throughput of heroes.
Funny how they are useless chavs till they join up and then they are heroes.
And I am so ashamed to have voted liberal. Still there won't be a liberal party after the next election. i am starting to beleive that Blair and Clegg are Illuminati plants sent here to destroy left wing politics

They are not fighting for their country. They are fighting for a corrupt government.

The heroes campaign appears to invoke the standard at which people will agree to accept and support these unjust wars.

In their minds they are fighting for their country. I stated in my comment that the reason for the war may not be valid though - you cant blame the soldiers for that.

I can't agree with any amount of worship for troops, they're just doing their job.

What I do think is a good idea is 6 months compulsory service, it'll put some people right.

The last thing we need is a country full of squaddies.

It'd be more geared towards self discipline and respect for others etc. Not just general army training.
