think 1st i tried was slackware 2.6 pro - wowza!!!!! scarey shit!! had me beat for weeks but then sussed it...was alwatys problems configin vid cards!!!!!

slackware is the purists linux....hard work most of the time..

go with summit like suse 9.1, redhat 9 or mandrake 10...they nice n easy windows like ones..

am going slackware once i get back to grips with linux again tho...it is numero uno ;)

if u want more of a headache......give BSD a go

U mebbe unlucky there - u dont need to recompile the kernel mostly...cos newer kernel's have all required modules built in.

A few patched applied n ur sorted.

As for installin stuff - as long as u got all the pre-requisites (sp?!?!) such as compilers etc...its usually just a case of

    extract the acrhive
    cd to the directoty
    ./configure
    make
    make install

    jobs a gud'un!

tis messy yeah - but for most stuff as well u can jus get rpm's.....no manual configuration needed really - pretty much self installers.....

its messy(ish) but not half as much as it used to be and its worth sticking at (i think...)

problem is we all too used to windows stuff!

XP Pro at home and work. Windows is used by most people and companies at desktop level, it does it's job - whats the big deal!

I used to support Unix - but it's hard to use, configure and support. i want an easy life.

I prefer UNIX but have Xp on my work and home machine. My work machine has never crashed or hung etc. Very stable.
