My m8's pc runs xp home , legit , fully upto date in microsoft updates , ie7 , mcafee antivirus up to date , adaware up to date etc but still cant get rid of this one pesky hijack ??

His bairn had been on and clicking things lol , ended up with spydoctor , netsnoop and all kinds installed which ive managed to remove no probs !!!

just to add his home page is still set to google in internet options !!

Does it change back if you manually change your homepage?

Download Windows Defender from the Microsoft site, and download Spybot Search & Destroy. Run scans for both.

Post up a Hijack This log too.

Alternatively if it still refuses to go away...one way to stop it loading is to block it.

    Go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc

Open the file called HOSTS in notepad.

create a new entry along the lines of:

    127.0.0.1 www.dodgysite.com

this will just make the site display "page cannot be displayed" and it won't be able to download any software.

they actually run in THIS order :

    1. HKLM\Software\...\RunServicesOnce
    2. HKLM\Software\...\RunServices
    [login]
    3. HKLM\Software\...\RunOnce
    4. HKLM\Software\...\Run
    5. HKCU\Software\...\Run
    [startup folder]
    6. HKCU\Software\...\RunOnce

and as for modifying the HOSTS file - just use this one rather than putting them in individually : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
