Wanted - Decent PC I know a few of u build pc's on here and I'll be after a new one in about 4 or five weeks. I basically want something that can run Reason, is powerful enough for Broadband, quite a large harddrive, Cd rom and re-writer. Can any1 give me any specs/estimates? My monitor should work fine with any other pc shouldn't it? Sorry, I aint really got a clue Jimmy
if you're only after a base unit, i always (seem) to reccommend www.computerorbit.co.uk They do 'ready made' base units, you just choose the spec u want and off u go. Prices start at about £200 upwards. I know Revel got his upgraded there i think - it might be worth asking him what he thought of the service. They'll sort you out with the hardware - software is easy to get hold of.
revel recomended orbit to me as well but i sorted mine by junking the ati graphics card and buying a 256 mb geforce one been working fine ever scince, will probably need updating by the end of the year tho
Aye Computer Orbit do: AMD XP2400 256mb SDRAM 40gb Hard disk (Just ask for a bigger one if need be) Soundcard VGA DVDRom Drive 56K Modem Keyboard Mouse Speakers 17" Monitor No OS All for £340 A few people I know have went for this and gave them to me to install an OS and various software on them. It's a cracking PC to start with, then just let them know if you want any specific soundcard or VGA card added instead of the bog standard ones.
Aye but if theres an issue with the pc it will take ages to get sorted if the shop aint based locally. After all if he buys it in form of pre-built base unit online if he opens it up he voids the onsite warranty
buy the parts from ebuyer.com, looking at sub 200 for what u want if you already have a monitor, probably 150.
£150 for a case, graphics card, sound card, hard drive, motherboard, processor, memory cd/dvd writer, power supply, cables.....and more?! Thing with wanting to run reason etc....the standard sound and graphics cards wont be alot of use, and you need alot of memory....I doub't it would be that cheap! If it was, I'd have a new pc every 2 months
Ok basic machine, don't know what reason is but hey... Case and psu - £9.39 Motherboard - £17.85 Pcchips KT266A SKT A DDR Sound LAN USB 2.0 Retail Box CPU - £39.39 AMD Athlon 2000+ Xp 0.13micron 266fsb OEM Tray CPU Ram - £62.93 Ebuyer 512MB DDR266 PC2100 Extra Value RAM GFX - £31.06 Sapphire Radeon 9200SE 64MB DDR 8x AGP TV-Out Retail Box Hdisk - £44.48 Western Digital Caviar 80Gb 7200rpm EIDE Hard Drive - OEM Cd Writer - £20.27 Liteon 52x32x52x IDE DRIVE - OEM Cables with come with motherboard more than likely, if not add £5. £225 in total, bit over 200 quid but you can cut down on ram etc if needed be, dont know exactly what reason is so you might not need 512mb for it, also maybe a lower cpu.
Doesn't the 2000+ only run at around 1300mhz? Reason is a very powerful production tool, loves memory...so 512mb will be a better bet like. Where can u get case and psu for £9.99?? You forgot sound card Do those prices include VAT?
all those parts are from ebuyer and are inc vat, there are 3 or 4 cases at 9 quid inc vat. personally my case cost me 100 quid but my machine is quality . the 2000 relates to intel equivalent, so yes it may run at technically a lower mhz, but it is 2 gig equivalent. I run my barton 2500 at 3200 Don't need sound card, on board is fine, the sound chips are so small now, that even the onboard ones pack out decent quality. I use my on board 6 channel sound and its fine. For my builds now i never get a separate soundcard, the only card i have in the slot is an agp card. I use onboard lan which is fine. I've got a 3com onboard lan card and also an nforce onboard. I use the 3com for my ftp and net connection as it through puts a true 100mb. The nforce doesn't seem to be able to compete with the 3com so i use that for my xbox hook up, but speeds are fine with that.
he will probs need a better soundcard if hes gonna use it for production.... he will need 512Mb ram too for reason/logic or whatever....(at least)
Does it hell. Supposed too, but look at benchmarks, it runs about equivalent to a celeron of the equivalent MHz value, but well below an equivalent P4 (espec the new high end P4 chips, the HT/800FSB chips, the EE, etc).
It's the equivalent, the chips are better at different things, you can't automatically say intel make better chips. I will never buy intel again, have not had an intel since the p2 300 and that was ages ago.
yes, each chip has relative strengths and weaknesses; however, take a look at overall performance, eg. WinMark, ripping DVD times, etc. , the MHZ clock speeds correlate very well with performance.
