    Veggies

I'm im a debate tomorrow about vegitarianism (opposing) and I've been looking at some pretty interesting stuff. Apologies to any veggies on here that may have known this for years but I was really quite shocked at some of the stuff I have came across.

The amount of alternatives that need to be eaten to replace the lack of:
    • Vit D
    • Zinc
    • Vit B12
    • Iron
    • Calcium

    Must be tedious?

Most biscuits have animal fat in them, as do pie crusts.

Chewing gum contains animal glycerin, so do most brands of toothpaste.

Camera films are mainly animal gelatin.

Any veggies enlighten me as to how bad it is to get used to?

    :D

They're pretty daft if you ask me, it's an animal for god sake.

Especially the ones that think it's ok to eat fish because erm well they're just not as important as cows or pigs.

I can see why people may eat fish but no other animals but if i was to be a veggie i'd either be all out, or not at all.

My mam is a veggie and the cooking has gone way down hill when it comes to family meal times

would you eat dog? cat? dolphin? monkey? human?

you make a choice to only eat certain animals why shouldn't others?

in response to the original q i don't eat meat and if you have a balanced diet then its no harder than if you ate meat?

you get most vitamin D from sunlight not dietary sources, and milks, cereal an bread etc are often fortified with it anyway.

zinc - beans, whole grain cereals etc are common alternatives to meat, so usually included in the diet enough to exceed zinc requirements

B12 most cereals are now fortified with B12 now, an most veggies eat dairy so again not really a prob...

calcium again dairy but not so much can actually be used... but green veg & nuts/seeds have adequate amounts of both calcium an iron.

so unless you aren't eating a balanced diet then its no different to eating meat... the only problems occur if you aren't and these are the same as if you ate meat anyways? :spangled:

and as i said, i don't eat meat (not vegetarian)... obviously there's gonna be some animal products in things i might use, but the animals are killed for the (evil, murderous ;) ) meat trade and any other uses are just by-products of this...

if i HAD to eat meat to survive, then yes of course i would, but i don't, so why should i if i choose not to?

    why is that daft :spangled:

I think you've misunderstood that. Cod stocks are low on the continental shelf because of global warming, the world isn't running out of fish.

My flatmate is veggie so most of the food i cook is meat free. i've found it makes me feel healthier and helps me lose weight to eat less meat. You don't need to take supplements to get the extra vitamins etc, as long as your diet is balanced you're ok.

fair enough if you are making a choice about which meats you eat, so do i, its no big problem - just I HATE it when people say they are

"a vegetarian....but I eat fish" IN WHICH CASE YOU ARENT THEN?

    aaaaaaaaah!

I love eating meat, I don't kill it, I dont see the fluffy bunnies in my rabbit pie, I dont see the ickle piggies in my pork and sage meatballs. If I change to a vegetarian it will make NO difference to the amount of animals which are slaughtered for food, so I will continue eating meat.

I understand why people are vegetarians, but vegans are a bit extreme! I couldnt be arsed, but well done to them for their strength of their convictions.

Not trying to make you give up meat or anything... but that's the bullshit excuse really isn't it?

like when people say i'm not voting cos it won't make a difference (ok maybe not totally like that but the same sorta thing).

or "my £2 isn't gonna make a difference so i'm not giving to charity..."

they only kill animals because there's a demand for it. if this demand is reduced then the number killed will be reduced. they don't just kill them for you to eat you know, its a business, how they feed/cloth their family etc...

Lee i knew you were taking the piss but i bet you don't eat the cute/socially unacceptable animals but do eat the socially acceptable ones? ;)

also loopsy people are vegetarian for different reasons... some as snack said do it for purely nutritional purposes... in which case fish may be eaten as it provides a good source of Omega 3.

    Why?

They don't rub a dead chicken on the crisps to make them taste of chicken.
