Using monitors? I've had decks for about 7 months and am obviously still in the 'bedroom DJ' phase, but people talk about mixing using monitors rather than headphones and I don't know what they're on about. If anyone could give me an insight into monitor mixing and how it is different to headphone mixing it would be greatly appreciated.
'monitors' are just another name for your speakers... but they're kinda pointing at you.... one ear listens to whats coming from the speakers i.e. what the crowd are hearing, the other ear has your headphone on (just one mind) listening to the track you're queing up. Which ear u have yer headphone on is all dependant on what u feel most comfortable with.... with experience - u can seperate the 2 tracks by which ear it's coming in, supposedly making it easier to figure out if the que track is the right speed as the track blasting out. thats basically it.
Oh right, cheers, that's how I mix anyway, one ear listening to headphone and one to speaker. Sorted! Thanks for clearing that up
yeah, they are just called monitors cos they let the DJ monitor whats going out in the club. and they arent the clubs main speakers. It usually impossible to mix just using the club speakers, as they are normally too far away, so there is a delay on the sound...
There's a function on my mixer to split the cue signal so you can listen to both tracks, one through each phone. Canny but as you say, sweaty ears. Plus I've gotten into the habit of having 1 side hanging off my head now anyways.
I agrre with everything you said, apart from........ ''Another possible drawback is that anyone close enough to the DJ booth might be able to hear you cue up - not good IMHO.'' Ive never seen someone use monitors for cueing up tracks. Monitor speakers can be heard pretty well in nearly every club. Cue up on your headphones, check its in sync, they i put my phones around my neck ands use the monitor during the mix.
ive seen tiesto use monitors to mix 'on the fly' as it was.....hes the noly person ive seen do it tho.
Where, surely he got it close on his head phones. I mean, whirling through the record to find your cue point must have sounded awfull
Id never do it, altough i played out the other week and had no monitor, that was pretty shit. Was hard to be brave when bringing in am ix, in case is was out slighty, was hard work anyway.
