it should work on both - but Mac OS x will put loads of temp 'recyle' folders on - which you'll see when u have it on a windows machine

oh, don't have it as NTFS - most come pre-formatted as Fat16 i think

I bought a 120 gb usb hard drive instead. It works fine except for one issue. I have a file that is 5.2gb in size, a .dmg file for the mac. Windows Vista won't let me copy it to the usb drive saying the file is too large for that destination.
Ive tried cut and paste, copy, and move to etc...
anyone any ideas why this should happen.

the hard disk will be formatted in Fat16 or 32 which doesn't like files over a certain size

EDIT : hang on, i'm not sure...

    right - read this : http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-187283.html

FAT max file size is 4gb. NTFS will handle bigger files.

HOWEVER, Mac OSX can only READ NTFS file systems, not write to them so i've you have the 5gig file, on a USB drive formatted with NTFS you WILL be able to copy it OFF the drive onto the mac but not write to the drive

No, that could be 1 issue - but it's definately the file system on the USB drive. FAT only supports a max file size 4gb
