    USB Hubs

I need more ports on my laptop and don\'t understand all this upstream downtream passive etc malarky.

I want to run a modem, a mouse and an external hard drive (which needs to be plugged into the wall for power)

Advice please form you geeky guys please?

I\'ve broke some of the ports on my laptop and currently only have one that works. Was just thinking of buying a hub with 7 or more ports to run everything through it.

I\'ve a Toshiba Portege S100-115 with Ram upgraded to 1,536 MB

I think I'm right in saying passive means it runs off the USB bus internal power instead of it's own... obviously bad if you're plugging stuff like hard drives in.

My advice would be: make sure it's USB 2.0 and that it has a power supply if you're gonna run extra devices like that.

this looks like it could be a good starting point.

Just out of curiosity, what removable hard drive are you using? I've got a 2.5" caddy and it doesn't require any extra power :)

Thanks, I think I am getting that one but with 8 ports instead of 4.

I\'m using a Western Digital 250gb external hard drive
