unix... LOADS of help on the net!!!! But...to clear one thing up 1st...are u actually trying to learn UNIX as in howto use the Operating System or u doin summit @ uni or whatever that involves UNIX Scripting? (Programming...) PS. Av moved this thread as well into correct forum
Linux.. Dont be scared to dabble with it at all - linux these days is a LOT LOT more user friendly...... If you have a pretty powerful PC then have a look at www.vmware.com. This way you can install Linux on a VIRTUAL PC....meaning you dont need to repartition etc to get a feel for it... You simply boot up a new "pc" in a window (can have full screen) from within windows...it really is good! You will find 1 thing tho with *nix - it is a LOT LOT more stable/robust than windows operating systems....but then again it IS a big step away from what you are used to...you instantly loose all of the "everything is compatable" thing...granted you can do the same thing as I mentioned before from within a *nix system...u can have a virtual windows pc running for any windows tasks u need to carry out...or there are windows emulaters such as WINE that u can use... Have a read up on it tho (Linux is best to start with rather than jumping straight into Unix I wud say...) - regardless wot sum ppl may say..and without sounding like a sad twat...its fun Enjoy PS. SUSE Linix 9.0 - VERY VERY good distribution....its 5 CD's but if you gimme a shout n ask nicely al sort you out an evaluation version
Unix is pretty cool like, not too bad really. I particularly like the finger command...tells you who every one on the network is...and then you can send them messages i hear terrible things about the VI text editor.....since we are all UNIX n00bs here at uni, we use Pico! What exactly are you trying to do?
