a.) In the 1960s the Borough of Teesside was created and later in 1974, the County of Cleveland formed.

b.) The new county claimed land from both sides of the river and Teesside's identity became distinct from Durham and Yorkshire

c.) In 1996 and 1997 more local government reforms took place. Cleveland was abolished and Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton, and Redcar gained unitary status independent of County Durham.
