Portsmouth have pulled off a double transfer deadline day swoop for Newcastle's Lomano LuaLua and Leicester's John Curtis.

Struggling Pompey have clinched a three-month loan deal for striker LuaLua and will discuss a permanent transfer with the Magpies towards the end of the season.

The 23-year-old Congo striker has moved to Fratton Park for a loan fee of £100,000 after rejecting a move to Leeds.

The south-coast club have also landed Leicester defender Curtis in a transfer which did not involve a fee being paid by Pompey but did incur 'agency fees'.

The 25-year-old has signed a one-and-a-half-year contract for Harry Redknapp's team.

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric, who offered Newcastle £1.5m for LuaLua and defender Andy Griffin at the weekend, said: "We have concluded our mission to sign two decent players.

"My friend Freddy Shepherd [Newcastle chairman] told me that the money we offered them wouldn't even get us LuaLua's left leg.

"Well, we now have both legs and the rest of him as well.

"We've paid a £100,000 loan fee and have him for the season. We'll keep talking to Newcastle to make a decision about a possible long-term relationship with LuaLua.''

LuaLua's agent Tony Finnigan revealed his client, the former Colchester forward, was eager for regular Premiership action.

He said: "Lomana's chuffed to have the opportunity to play first-team football, which is what he will get at a club with a boss who has managed some of the best players this country has ever had.

"He's turned down Leeds and is happy to go to Portsmouth. He just wants to play first-team football.

"And, depending on how Lomana does, his loan could be extended or the move made permanent.''

Finnigan added Newcastle have written a clause into LuaLua's loan which will allow them to recall him if needed after 28 days.

Robinson move off as Spurs target Hammers ace Defoe

Paul Robinson's proposed move to Spurs has fallen through with Tottenham now hoping to seal a deal for West Ham striker Jermain Defoe.

The White Hart Lane club were apparently due to give Leeds a £2m down-payment now for Robinson, with a further £500,000 due in the summer when the England international would complete the move.

But Leeds later confirmed he would be staying with the bottom club.

Tottenham were understood to be willing to allow Robinson to stay with Leeds for the final 15 matches of the season to aid United in their bid to avoid relegation.

But Spurs have instead turned their attentions to pushing through a deal for West Ham's Defoe, with the striker seemingly joining Tottenham for around £7m and Bobby Zamora moving in the opposite direction.
