Toon turn to Gravesen after van Bommel price shock

Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson wants to land Everton star Thomas Gravesen this summer - after being priced out of a move for Mark van Bommel.

Robson is keen to land a central midfield enforcer to succeed veteran Gary Speed - and sees Gravesen as the perfect alternative to PSV battler van Bommel.

Newcastle made an enquiry regarding van Bommel and were told he will cost £6m, which is out of their price range while Champions League qualification remains in doubt.

Charlton, Tottenham and German club Schalke are also keen on the Holland international.

Gravesen, meanwhile, would be priced at around £2m if Everton can be persuaded to part with the 28-year-old Denmark international.

"Bobby would love van Bommel but recognises the type of money PSV are talking about is not available to him unless Newcastle are in the Champions League," said a Newcastle source.

"Finishing fourth this season isn't enough - after what happened with us losing in the Champions League qualifying round last year, the manager will have to wait until we are actually in the group stage of the competition before spending big money."

    i think it's a good move..

Too right. He's a dirty hacking wanker. I'd still have him in the side like.

    I have always rated him.

Never understood why he isnt one of the first names on Moyes teamsheet.

graveson is a good player, but i think we could find someone else, he is afterall 28 which means he's probably at/or past his best as a player, think we should get a younger talent tbh

Graveson is a good player - but I wouldn't call him a "midfield enforcer". He's actually more of a passer/playmaker. Have seen him play well in loads of games though for some strange reason I don't think the Everton fans are too keen on him

van Bommel, the understanding I have is that its between Schalke and Spurs for him. He has come out and said Villa don't interest him and Charlton was just agent talk. He is talking to Spurs this week. I don't think he'll cost 6M, nearer to 4M cos he's out of contract next season. We (spurs) have offered 3M from what I've heard but talks on-going. Not the all-action midfielder we need, he seemed to stroll around SJP last week but a definite improvement on the crap in midfield I've had to put up with for the last 10 years
