Time for video playbacks for refs in football Yet another world cup where I feel that bad ref calls had as much to do with who wins as player skill. I think it's about time fifa did some serious research on how to deliver video replays to refs quickly and on-pitch so that they can make the correct calls without spoiling the flow of the game. Thoughts?
tbh the game is crying out for it, especially after this world cup - unless every ref is like a collina clone they're not going to pick everything up anyway. Sports that are more traditional in this country such as Rugby and Cricket have taken vid refs/vid judgements onboard and it's worked for them... why not football?
i think the refing throught this whole tourament has been it's blight - really ruined it definate video replays
now that they've got the madonna-esque mics on theres no reason why they cant have another official with vid playback who can advise the ref from the stands. bit like the run-out umpire in cricket. the ref-ing this world cup has been abismal like, far too happy to card and stop the game which always spoils the flow. also allows cheating/diving teams to regain possession by simply falling to the floor.
i think a 5th official. Like the third umpire in cricket. Someone who sits in the stands with a few monitors! With the amount of cameras at games now, it would take two seconds to view an incident from a few different angles. something defo needs to be done
the problem is that fifa and sepp blatter want the game to run the same at grassroots level as it does at international... so a pub team plays with the same rules as brazil... fifa sees the introduction of technology as putting a barrier between top class football and lower lever football. however while they have a point that sunday league football is unlikely to ever get video replays... surely top class football is highly evolved from a 22 man kickaround anyway... the money involved and at stake for a start.
Re: Time for video playbacks for refs in football They could put a camera pitch side the fourth official who basically does bot all anyway could then view the replay and judge what happend all of this could be done in twenty seconds from the incident happening to the ref brandishing the appropriate yellow or red or just giving a decision ! I still think a top professional ref should be trained and tested to see if they can officiate properley as it seemed to be mainly the smaller european and dodgy south american refs that made the worse decisions (apart from polls massive gaffe of course )
i personally think it would be a waste of time maybe im alone on this refs can only see so much and are easily criticised when they make a mistake, the linesman and 4th officail are supposed to help as much as they can
They should be encouraging former players into refereeing. Most refs seem to never have kicked a ball in their lives.
I don't think that's the point. It is impossible for a human to see everything that happens on a football pitch with their own eyes. No matter how good they are they are going to miss stuff.
Thats a complete cop-out on Fifa's part. Cricket & Rugby are both played at "grass-roots" level without video refereeing... I don't see it creating a two-tier sport there.
true. the replays on the tele are almost instantaneous, and most refs wear earpieces these days. i cant see what the catch is especially for ball crossing the line instances.
I suppose you could have a ref for the right side of the pitch, and one for the left side. One of them would have to stay slightly in front of play, and the other slightly behind it to get most angles covered. It's hardly infallible, personally i think it's a shit idea, but Blatter wants to keep the game technology free, jumper-for-goalposts and all that. Video all the way imo At grounds with Video screens, like Highbury, don't they show instant replays anyway?
