    This weeks Chron

The clubs section has moved to Friday from now on peeps, better for everyone all round I think. This weeks column has a reflective flavour....

As the main thrust of the local clubbing birthday season approaches, there’s plenty to be looking forward to and for no one less so than myself. Having seen one of my own personal efforts through to its first year though, I can safely say that the past 12 months have been a pretty steep learning curve to say the least. True, there’s the constant reminder that there are still many in action who’ve survived for over a decade, but when it’s your own baby a year can feel like a lifetime.

This time last year the efforts and experiences of myself and friends, Simon Lister and Peter Wilson, were fused together and a new club – People Get Real – was born. The principal wasn’t to compete, but to fill a big musical gap in Newcastle’s scene. We didn’t have a music policy as such we just loved a lot of great new music that didn’t quite fit into the existing scheme of things. As well as a whole host of DJ’s and Producers who’d been confined to the south for way too long.

Of all the parties we’ve thrown in the past twelve months though it was undoubtedly our one-off album launch party for the Unabombers at the Northern Light in Leeds that seemed to give the night a life and spirit of it’s own.

At times seemingly clutching defeat from the jaws of victory, the end product was dusted from floor to ceiling in disco magic, making every day of graft in the two months prior to it satisfyingly justified. Preparations were long and drawn out and as the day approached the pressure really intensified, to the point at which most would’ve walked away. It was a belief in what we were doing and who we were doing it for that pushed us forward. It proved that to make magic, you have to move mountains. It also showed that with a little self-belief you can achieve anything, which I suppose has been the biggest lesson all three of us have learnt from our on-going adventures.

Writing this column for as long as I have, I’ve been both lucky and unfortunate enough to witness so awesome triumphs and spectacular failures respectively, never once though did they sour my faith in the scene and as such, my faith in People Get Real.
Who really knows what the next year will hold, it will certainly be as big an adventure I’m sure. Plans are currently afoot for some one-off specials and our ever-magical sets in the Always room of Promise - one of the few fellow promotional teams who’ve continually supported our own little family- will continue. The next of which conveniently lands tonight, so bring your party hats, goodness knows there’s plenty to celebrate.

People Get Real in the Always room of Promise at Foundation. Main room, Yoji Biomehanika & Richard Tulip Doors. 10pm - 3am
