The war in Afghanistan A majority of the public oppose this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5393030.stm I'm amazed...I actually supported the move in the first place, and I support the continued presence. I support moving in reinforcements, and frankly I'm at a loss to explain this public opinion, beyond a reflex 'war is bad'. Any thoughts?
I can see that the objectives are sound but I just don't think we can realistically acheive them. History shows that foreign powers in Afghanistan will get their arses kicked. This was true the last time we were there and happenned to the russians and will happen to the americans and us again. I think people in the UK just don't want to see loads of our soldiers killed in what will ultimately be a futile excercise.
good question........ I know what they were said to be originally ie helping to build a civil state. I know what I think they actually were........ to help dig the US out of the hole it has got itself in in Afghanistan and fight the Taliban And I think I can guess what they will become........... being able to retreat whilst saving face for the politicians who sent the troops there in the first place meanwhile hundreds of brits will die a futile death
Operation Enduring Freedom was reactive campaign against the Taliban/Al-Qaeda... Afghanistan was accused of supporting terrorism in the wake of 9/11 The Taliban were asked to: 1. Deliver to the US all of the leaders of Al Qaeda 2. Release all imprisoned foreign nationals 3. Close immediately every terrorist training camp 4. Hand over every terrorist and their supporters to appropriate authorities 5. Give the United States full access to terrorist training camps for inspection The Taliban did not comply, so the coalition of the willing invaded.... It had nothing to do with building a civil state (rebuilding Afghanistan was an objective which was developed as one of the justifications for the conflict... but it was not an intial objective).
Apparenlty theres a big news blackout on how bad things are out there. The Para's have been involved in some of the harshest hand to hand fighting since WW2 and theres been 6 recoms for Victoria Cross's to be awarded (thats MASSIVE!). Helmand Province is right at the bottom of my list of holiday destinations atm and my heart goes out to the poor lambs in the service out there waiting to get popped. Brackens brother is out there
sorry I thought we were talking about the present deployment to helman province. yes the original purpose was to kick some ass in revenge for 11/9 sadly now we see the biters bit
