I love films like this but for some reason I've never seen it.

I think I was too into saving private ryan to give a shit about it.

I may buy it if it's a cheap enough DVD.

 i love saving private ryan - but this is a different perspective on war, rather than the glory or the success, but more subtley about the impact on the men and how they're used and thought of.

    good buy!

tbh I think this film got over shadowed by saving private ryan because they had similar release dates.

Do you like that one with Mel Gibson in? We were soldiers?

Its gash - any war film that is patriotic like that is bound to lack any real depth.

Saving Private Ryan is a good movie but quite over-rated. The Thin Red Line is far better as it shows the real horror of war and goes deep into the psychological effects war can have on soldiers which in turn involves you more as a veiwer.

Most half wits passed it off as boring because it wasnt about machine guns going off every 10 seconds but realistically this is up there amongst the best war films ever made.

What else has Terry Mallick done apart from this and Badlands though?

No way! It deserves all the credit it gets.

Black hawk down is another good one.

i wanted to like 'we were soldiers' but no, it was gash - i know platoon was 'oo look at us poor americans get killed in vietnam' too, the gibson was tosh

private ryan is brilliant, go a bit soppy at the end with them staying to help - but the first half is jaw droppingly good.
