Featuring some of the UK's top dj’s and producers such as - Sundissential resident and Tidy Weekender guest - Deano Since Deano broke on to the hard dance scene 4 years ago things have gone from strength to strength. After his very first set he gained his 1st residency at damnation (Wakefield). From there things really started to take off !! Deano then started his own night, the much talked about and highly rated Incision night in Leeds, running Incision with 3 of his friends. He still found time to push his self further with dj’ing. Deano’s sound and ability to mix started to make waves across the hard dance scene. His hard work and unique harder edged nrg sound have gained him sets up and down the country some of these are - Insomnacz (Sheffield), Wildchild (London), Addiction, Toast and Binary (Manchester), Goodgreef (Wakefield). Cyberdog (Camden, London and Leeds) and the 4Clubbers Xmas party. Deano had established his self a solid reputation as a reliable, crowd pleaser whose technical ability is second to none. From there Deano gained a residency at the well know Leeds night house wives choice. This is where Deano and Sam Townend played there very first set together. Things really started to take off after years of hard work when deano was asked, along with Sam Townend to play at GoodGreef v’s Promise< (Leeds) on 27th of march 2005, as well as this they received booking from tidy trax to play at tidy ski as well as Judge there Summer Camp dj compertion (Leeds heats). As well as playing back 2 back with Sam, Deano was still gaining sets by his self. One of the most successful nights in the north then asked Deano to be a resident. Parlez-Vouz this had been one of Deano’s favourite nights out for a long time and to be asked to become a resident was one of his goals in dj’ing. Another of his goals was to play at sundissential, its was at sundissential in 1999 where deano saw the late Tony De Vit play. Seeing Tony De Vit play and work the crowed with the tunes he played inspired deano to do the same. It was a chance meeting with madders that gave him and Sam townend the chance to play at sundissential north in august 2005. From that set things have grown and deano and Sam townend is now sundissential resident’s play at all sundissential events. As well as this deano is helping madders and the sundissential team with promotions in and around leeds. The past year has also seen sam townend grace the decks for tidy trax, undoubtbly one of the biggest names in hard dance today. Playing at tidy Leeds, TWX (tidy weekender 10), New Year weekender and TW11 playing the main room. As well as furthering his blooming career in dj’ing deano is starting to make tunes and remix’s with artist such as Sam towned, Jon BW, Scott Fo Shaw and Chris Impact. The Howard resident - Em Extreme Introducing South Yorkshire’s latest upcoming DJ talent …..the lovely Em-Extreme. But don’t let that sweet little smile fool you. She may be pretty, but let her loose on the decks and she’s a true stomper! Em-Extreme (also known as Little Miss Barnsley) is renowned throughout clubland not only for her friendly and approachable personality but also for her ability to recognise, and adapt to, good music and diverse mixing styles. Having been a DJ for over five years, her technical abilities are well developed and her passion for music has helped her establish a unique style that few others would be capable of replicating. Her hard house debut at The Howard in Sheffield last year was met with acclaim from both clubbers and promoters alike. Her next gig at Rhythm Room< in Hull was immediately followed by a repeat booking for Boxing Day, in which her excellent tune selection and breathtaking stage presence stole the show. More recently, she has warmed up for hard house hero Paul Glazby at Sheffield’s hottest new club night Off the Rails, with fresh and funky hard house which went down like storm with the crowd. She has also been showcasing her talent to a wider audience with regular sets for Funky Mothas, playing the dirtiest of electro, which in turn has secured her first residency. Elating dance floors throughout the UK, Em-Extreme will have you wondering why on earth you ever go to sleep in the first place. Her unique live sets are not to be missed. UK44 / Boscaland Records and the legendry man himself - M-Zone Interview with the God father of Hard Trance himself... M-ZONE How and when did you get into DJ'ing? I've been Dj'ing for 18 years now. You've played at some of the best venues worldwide but which one stood out the most for ya? WEMF in Canada Following on from the last question, who has been your favourite promoter to work for and who throws the best parties? For me its Stuart Walker from Dizstruxshon, Then again I do help him run his night! UK44 was, and probably still is, the UK's best Hard Trance label. Why did it disappear when Trance was becoming more popular and are there any plans to resurrect the label? Unfortunately my distributor felt it right not to give me any profits from its success. We sold over 10,000 records, and didn't see a penny. I wasn't prepared to take my artist through it again so I let them go and do there own stuff, and set up Warning records which only lasted 3 releases as the distributor went bust. I now help Marcus Keas @ everlasting records in Germany with Fate & Rewire. When I am confident enough I'll star another label up. You are seen by many as the godfather of Hard Trance in the UK and although you have played for all of the major underground promoters you have been overlooked by the big trance clubs such as Gatecrasher and Gods kitchen. Does this bother you, and if you were given the chance would you play for them? I've been asked recently to play for Gods Kitchen, but I'm in two minds. I think Big Super Clubs over commercialise the scene. And eventually kill it… My Scene is healthy, I like to keep it that way! Many Underground labels such as Overdose and Tracid Traxx are now massive mainstream labels and every Judge Jules wannabe is playing them. Do you therefore think there is still an 'Underground' Hard Trance scene and if so how can the Underground distance itself from the mainstream circuit. Don't really play them labels now, that was 1 or 2 years ago… Aren't they slow???? We've already moved to a new sound …. We are underground… With most other big name Hard Trance DJ's concentrating on other styles i.e. Mark EG - Techno, Vortex - Tech-Trance, Sharkey + Energy - Freeform, that leaves yourself and Cally + Juice as the only main 'Big name' DJ'S flying the flag for the Hard Trance sound, do you think it's time for some new blood to be introduced into the scene? Very strange question…. Why the Categories?? Mark EG - Techno, No, When he plays at events in the UK he plays London Techno & Techno Trance. Vortex - Tech-Trance, Hard Trance Sharkey + Energy - Freeform, UK Hard Trance would not get played in Germany. Cally + Juice, Commercial Hard Trance - A Compromise. All these fall under the banner of Hard Trance in some way. My music is for open minded people who love to party, isn't that what it's all about ? There is always room for more DJ's here …. But make your own style…. Finally, what is you're all time favourite tune, label and producer? Not telling you…. This time I'm not giving it away, for someone to make a mess of it! Why this name? DJ M-Zone's Interview In 'Upfront' (2002) Click Here For M-Zones Feb 2003 Online Mix!! A pioneer in the truest sense of the word, Doncaster based DJ M Zone has been consistently pushing the underground sounds of trance and techno in the UK for nearly 10 years now. Despite his relatively unknown profile M Zone, real name Mick, has had well over 100 underground releases on labels as influential as Tinrib, Bonzai and his own, now defunct, imprint UK44. Since his breakthrough gig at Doncaster Warehouse way back in 1991 he has gone onto to play in scenes such as Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan gaining support over the years from the insane Mark EG, Carl Cox and the legendary Tony De Vit. Add to this the fact that he was the first person to bring a certain Timo Mass to play in the UK, following their successful collaboration "The Friendship EP", and you have one of the most comprehensive contributions to the underground trance scene of any UK DJ. While the Mass appeal may have spread to coffee tables and concert halls alike M Zone has continued to pursue and progress the underground scene that he has always loved. "Basically my sets are based on underground, pumping and exciting music" explains M Zone. Excitedly, he continues describing the feelings that have inspired him to dedicate nearly a third of his life to the cause, "I believe deeply that the scene I am involved should always be on the move". While words like this can roll so cynically off the clichéd tongue of many big name DJs it's hard not to take M Zone seriously, after all this is a DJ who even today spends much of his time seeking out those all important and elusive groundbreaking tracks. "I still buy at least 90% of my tunes, you can't just rely on what mailing lists you're on, you have to search out your own style" is an ethos that has seen M Zone celebrated as a DJ who knows what his crowd wants even before they do. Despite all this hard work many of the bigger trance clubs have chosen to overlook M Zone's talents in favour of the ready packaged genre hopping celebrity DJs who circulate the mainstream scene. Never one to turn downa party, he would still be excited by the prospect of playing the Gatecrashers of this world saying "I would like to play some of the bigger parties just to see what sort of reaction I would get." And what exactly does M Zone make of the superstar DJs who seem to consider trance the "next big thing" one moment and a dirty word the next? "I'm not sure how they do it but commercial DJs always seem to be one step behind musically. It seems that us underground DJs do all the experimenting and route making and they take all the glory." Slightly disheartened perhaps but never bitter, M Zone knows the only way to change peoples perceptions is to make things happen and that's exactly what he intends to do. "I always try to keep the scene alive and play an active part" he pledges with passion. Past actions offer much proof for these words and there appears to be no signs of any change in the future. Despite the untimely death of his long running trance outlet UK44 records ("All my labels profits have been absorbed as if by magic what more can I say?"), the wake has seen M Zone implement plans for a new and exciting label, titled Warning Records. Focusing on good quality underground trance Warning will feature artists from Canada and Germany as well as M Zone's own production work. Indeed with the over 10 years of experience behind him M Zone is understandably confident when talking about the label. "Warning is an accumulation of all the things I've done and learnt from my previous labels. As soon as we get the distribution sorted I'm sure people will be noticing some really exciting music from Warning." As an artist constantly searching to push the scene forward who is it that he turns to for inspiration? "German DJs because of their deep understanding of trance and techno and Italian producers because they know how to make music that makes people move." With this explosive combination of experience, enthusiasm and inspiration big things are expected from M Zone and Warning Records as he desperately searches to get the recognition he deserves, without compromising his musical integrity and if God really is a DJ (and an underground trance one at that) he'll definitely get it. Allan Mcgrath.
