    The Euro

Time for Britain to bite the bullet and sign up? I know a lot of people have this wild hair up their arse about Europe (we won the war blah blah blah), so I doubt it would ever get passed through a referendum. The Pound is now at its weakest ever level against it though.

i'm not really that fussed - it all does the same shit at the end of the day.

i'll miss stirling when it eventually gives up to the euro - however, what happens to all the stirling when it's recalled? does it get burned or somthing?

Fuck knows. In light of the governments push for recycling I imagine the notes will get recycled and the coins smelted.

Its the aim of this government, and those in power, to drive the value of the pound to the point where its in parity with the euro ... and then switch us over to that 'to ensure stability and the future of britain' (Or another lie like that)

I'm dead against it, 100%. We DO NOT need a central monetary system, or any more centralised power.

Getting the euro is another 'bye bye' to any of our national identity, and will be handing another massive chunk of our rights and ability to govern OURSELVES.

Also, we are going to need MASSIVE inflation in order to get prices and wages up to european standards if that happens. That aint gonna happen with wages any time soon.

    Euro = UK FUCKED.

I think the UK is canny fucked already to be honest.

I'm taking a keen interest in exchange rates at the minute. Once the Pound hits critically bad levels, I'm transferring all my Aussie Dollars into my English account thus making myself a nice little earner and more party money.

Its fucked, but so is the rest of the eurozone. In fact ... we are ALL fucked.

Centralising currency is something we all need to be completely against if we want to stand any chance of not sleepwalking ourselves into a new world order! ;)

isn't it all so that we can compete with the US having 1 currency?

i can't see a reason for OR against it to be honest.

    FOR

We can control our own supply of money (Not that we have a fucking clue right now - which is why the pound is toast) and have a chance at managing inflation

We can control our own interest rates that are relevant to our own country

    AGAINST

A single currency means all money supply and interest rates are consistant across the entire eurozone. What is good for one place might be terrible for another.

Centralised control is one step closer to a world we dont want to live in. Well i dont at least.

All prices would have to rise or drop in massive amounts to achieve parity with the rest of europe. Wages would have to be re-priced in euros which i bet would not adjust in a way that benefits everyone.

Europe was a good idea right after WWII when it was 'The common market' ..... Now its just a 55 billion pound per year bill to the country, with a load of unelected MP's making decisions for us.

    calm down calm down.
    the euro mp's are elected.
the EU has stopped us fighting each other for the first time in 1000 years. that alone makes it worth it.

what about scotland or cornwall? the interest rates for the whole of the uk are set in London. what's right for London may not be right for wales. we seem to have managed all right so far though.

we would not suffer from an overvalued pound trashing our exports to our main export countries which has been the case for the past 10 years or an undervalued pound doing the opposite which is happening now

we would be able to travel with one currency instead of having to pay money changers every time we go abroad

we would be part of a grouping with a currency which is fast replacing the dollar as a reserve currency with all the benefits that brings

and we could be in Europe instead of constantly standing on the sidelines, wringing our hands saying we're not playing

I don't think i will happen either. they wouldn't want us to join with the pound as it is, it would weaken the Euro to have the UK in it now. we're stuck with our crappy pounds for the forseeable future.

I think the moment we get a single currency, or as soon as we sign MORE treaties that take us down the one way road into complete control.... will be the point where people start to wonder whether thats what they ACTUALLY want.

We were all brought up as kids thinking that the idea of europe is some wonderful thing, but as time goes by i start to wonder whether i really want to be governed from an office in Brussels where people think what is good for one country is good for another.

Personally, i think total european control will eventually lead to dissent, as people realise they would prefer their own identity and means to govern THEMSELVES, rather than have the likes of Neil Kinnock making decisions for them.
