I didnt think Cern and The LHC existed! and this sounds like some proper offside shit, creating black holes which could end this world etc

The odds of it creating a black hole are absolutely minute.

would be kinda insane if it did though :)

are they doing the experiment live? i'd love to see that.

i know the dangers of creating a black hole are minute, however they havent ruled it out completely. even the physicisits on the program even admitted they didnt know exactly what is going to happen.

apparently it'll be a great lightshow tho, at an estimated cost of a few billion :)

Since I first read about the Collider i've been canny concerned like.

There are many Physicists around the world who think it's a very bad idea.

Notice my use of italics there, they pretty much sum up my worry.

im not particularly bothered if this causes the world to end, it'll be interesting to see what happens. and we will finally find out if theres anything beyond what we know

When the protons collide, Mr Kuhnt will bend over and unleash his black hole

yeah yeah we're all gunna die

truth is, no one really knows if it will even WORK properly - nevermind create the exact conditions. AND were black holes created at this point? black holes are usually created when stars die.

truth is, no one knows. but don't worry. it's just the paranoids out there - remember Y2K?

I've been completely fascinated by this whole experiment so late into it's progress, the fact that they are completely fucking religion off further is immense :)

finding the 'god partical' or the Higgs boson if you will, they seem to have went to great lengths just to complete complex mathematical equations on the standard model is great.

that documentary on the iplayer is a good watch too, although sometimes baffling - they try and put it into laymans terms as often as they can  :monkey:

and i've read up about this black hole malarky, and apparently on the off chance that it will happen, it will be so minute nothing much will happen, and it may also just vaporise instantly too. however since no man, machine or otherwise has much knowledge on black holes they cannot really state in much detail on what will happen if a smaller one is created :cool2:

on another program on this earlier in the year, they were more worried about if there was a small stable black hole created, since it would only destroy or vaporise/spaghettify everything in its immediate 'event horizon' which would only be a small area around it - then they would have to figure out how to destroy somehthing that technically cannot be contained, destroyed or even properly understood

scary stuff, although the image of hundreds of scientists running about like headless chickens in switzerland amuses me.

haha, yeah thats where i first heard about this, although thought it was pure fiction!

however that book ends with the pope jumping out of a helicopter and landing on top of the cistine chapel.

not worth taking seriously IMO
