Tax anyone got a rebate or been told they owe money? 'HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has begun sending out the first 45,000 letters to people who are affected' 'The remainder of the 5.7 million people affected will be contacted between now and Christmas' 'People who have underpaid and owe less than £2,000 will be able to have the money deducted from their salary on a monthly basis during the 2010/2011 tax year' 'But those who owe more than £2,000 will have to pay up in a lump sum' 'It's thought nearly one and a half million people owe an average of £1,500 each' however 'more people will get money back' 'Nearly six million people in the UK have paid the wrong amount of tax through the pay as you earn system, with around 4.3 million workers in line for a rebate worth £1.8bn in total, an average of £413 each, because they have paid too much'
With regards to those who have underpaid, due to HMRC errors; If a private business made this kind of error with your money, it would have to go down as a company loss. It's a fucking joke they expect people to cough up to cover the cost of their incompetencies.
i bet these letters didnt have to be translated into 100 foreign tounges like the rest of the goverments waffle
Exactly.... 'Paul Aplin, who chairs the tax technical committee at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, urged everyone to read their letters "very carefully". He added: "Have a look to see how they have calculated the tax. Have they put any benefits in there like a company car or medical benefits that you didn't actually have?" There is a tax calculator on the HMRC's website. However, taxpayers could still avoid paying any additional money if they can demonstrate they provided all the information necessary to calculate their tax correctly and the Revenue failed to use that information for 12 months. "You could use a concession to get them to write off some or all of the tax," Mr Aplin added'
i'm due a rebate, but not for this. however it'd be nice if a letter came through the door telling me that i'm owed even more
It only affects people if you've changed jobs, changed tax codes etc with out providing the info. Hopefully I'll get a rebate as I've been payin a lot of tax recently
