    still skint

Sunderland have announced an annual loss before tax of £8.8 million for the year ending 31 July 2005.

The Wearside club also revealed they are £40 million in debt and that annual turnover has decreased by 11 percent to £25.5 million.

Chairman Bob Murray was quick to point out that the figures were a reflection of the club's progress, however, and that they in no way signalled a decline in fortune.

"Since promotion, all available resources have been directed to team strengthening," he declared.

"Additional funds have been made available by lengthening the repayment periods for our two bank loans.

"We have looked to maximise our available resources by the use of the loan system and the acquisition of free agents.

"Transfer activity can no longer be measured by transfer fee expenditure alone, but the investment in wages for all players, including free agents and loan players, as well as loan fees and agency fees."
