    Sunderland Fans Upset the Taffs

    Read on:

A section of the great unwashed from down the road managed to annoy the citizens of Cardiff by disrupting the minute's silence at Ninian Park on Saturday for John Charles (on a day when the warring factions of Manchester United and Leeds managed to keep quiet when commemorating the same event.)

But as Mario Risoli wrote in the Western Mail it worked against them:

According to Cardiff City striker Peter Thorne, Sunderland's own fans played an unwitting part in their team's downfall at Ninian Park.

Before Saturday's kick-off a minute's silence was held in memory of John Charles, one of the finest players this island has produced, who died earlier that day after a long illness.

Well, it was supposed to be a silence. Sadly and shamefully, a minority of Sunderland supporters in the Grange End chose the 60 seconds to hurl abuse at Cardiff fans who, inevitably, fired back.

The City players, linked together around the centre circle as they and the rest of the 17,337 tried to pay tribute to Wales' greatest footballer, could hear the anti-Welsh remarks from the red and white corner of Ninian Park.

What better way to punish the offenders than to tear their team apart? That's what Thorne and company did.

    Thorne said:

"I looked over at their fans and thought to myself, 'We're gonna really turn you lot over."

And they did. But surely the loss in Wales was half-expected, given Sunderland's awful record in Europe, where they've failed to win a match since October 24th 1973

That Mackem European record in full:

    1973/74 Cup Winners Cup:

    Round 1:

    Vasas Budapest 0 SMB 2
    SMB 1 Vasas Budapest 0

    Round 2:

    SMB 2 Sporting Libson 1
    Sporting Lisbon 1 SMB 0

(PS - The mackems were forced to publish an apology via their website on Monday - unfortunately the gremlins got in the works meaning they called Cardiff's ground Ninina Park....)

PPS - We understand the Cardiff fans spent the closing stages of the game chanting "are you Scotland in disguise?"

Its shocking for ANYONE to do that.

All the blame cant be put to our fans tho.....

Cardiff fans hurling abuse back were just as bad - they cud have waited till after minutes silence....

Jus like wen ppl "shhhhhhhhhhhhhh" others for makin noise.,...do they not realise they are makin noise too n not helping?!?!

Its shit thing to do by all means, from anyone, but wont accept it was just our fault and lets face it EVERY club has had fans do stuff like this at 1 point or another....
