Sugar Shack/Digitized Apr 11th Judge Jules Cliffy Burrows Bigger Than Jesus Gaz Smith The Sugarshack & Digitized @ The Empire Theatre Friday April 11th 2008 Door Tax: TBA Main room: Judge Jules Cliffy Burrows Bigger Than Jesus Upstairs: Lucien Fraud Judge Jules: Jules began playing in 1987, launching the career that has easily notched up hundreds of thousands of miles, millions of spins of the decks and countless gigs in far-flung destinations, as well as the odd dirty warehouse thrown in for good measure. Jules’ DJ sets are the epitome of what DJing is about - passion, amazing tunes and a set of hands capable of the most nimble of mixing. With a list of awards that would make the American Olympic team blush, Jules has earned his place amongst the DJ aristocracy. Rarely out of DJ Mag’s top 15 in the annual Top 100 DJs poll, Jules has won such accolades as - “Best DJ” (Muzik Awards), No.1 DJ (Mixmag reader’s poll), “Best International DJ” (Dancestar), and “Best Radio DJ” at the Smirnoff Dancestars. Awards aside, there is no doubt that Jules remains one of the most popular figures in dance music, who has had the pleasure of playing some of the most sought-after gigs - notably for his beloved Arsenal FC and also, in January 2007, at the 20/20 one-day Australia v’s England cricket match at Sydney Cricket Ground. Jules’ ability to pull a crowd, shake them up and leave them wanting more makes him a promoter’s dream. Jules regularly plays at all the top club nights in the UK: Cream, Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, The Gallery @ Turnmills, Goodgreef, Slinky, Passion, Slinky, Lush (Northern Ireland), Inside Out @ Arches (Glasgow), Promise and the Honeyclub in Brighton. Plus he packs out fields at the UK’s best festivals and weekenders including Creamfields and Global Gathering. His deck dexterity is consistently in demand in Western and Eastern Europe (incl. Czech Rep., Russia, Romania, Hungary, Spain and Germany), the US, the southern hemisphere (Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and India) and on the African continent (The Pyramids, Egypt) and also U.A.E. Jules embraces dance music across the spectrum and you’re just as likely to find him spinning trance to 10,000 at a festival, as playing a rocking house set in a 500-capacity venue. Cliffy Burrows: He has played gigs around his home town of Middlesbrough and across the UK. He also has secured Radio Residencies on Afterhours.FM and Nettwerked Radio. In March 2006 he was picked from thousands of entries to appear on ETN FM's Rising Stars. The following month the same mix he did for that show was picked for Mix Disc Monthly's April 2006 Showcase which he went onto win and is now in their hall of fame. You can also check out his mixes on WaxDJ.com He was also head of promotions for Trancemixers.Com where he secured guest mixes from the likes of Ferry Corsten, Judge Jules, Activa, John Askew, Perry O'Neil, Manuel Le Saux, Graham Gold, Ian Betts, Thomas Datt, Neal Scarborough, Lange & Phynn plus many others. He also organised the Trancemixers night in Ibiza in conjunction with Vicky Devine at her Charlys Angelz night in Play 2. He took the station from a handful of listeners to maxing the server. 2007 started well for him with 2 Guest Mix appearances on Kuffdam’s Club Damage Show on DI.FM, a mix broadcast on national radio station Galaxy 105-106 FM and it has also seen him start ‘Digitized’ in conjunction with DJ Gaz Smith. Digitized is a company that spans all areas of Dance Music. There is Digitized Recordings the record label, Digitized Promotions and Management and of course Digitized the club night. The club night is currently held at The Pacific in Middlesbrough and has had headliners such as Activa, Kuffdam, Greg Downey, Marcos Euphonic, Jay K Walker & Jon O'Bir with Cliffy being one of the residents. In 2008 Digitized will be held at The Empire Theatre in Middlesbrough with some huge headliners including Paul Van Dyk, John Askew, Above & Beyond and Judge Jules with Cliffy making his Empire mainroom debut. It will also be launching it's new website www.digitizedmusic.co.uk soon. Watch this space. To add to all this he also produces under his own name and also under the guises of 'Order To Dance' & 'The Digitized Project'. Bigger Than Jesus: BIGGER THAN JESUS AKA Nick Adams and Pete Robinson are two of the most creative producers and DJ's to represent Northern England shizz! Constantly bringing their hedonistic party vibe, which their poor mama's christened them with, to wherever they play. This has lead to gigs in every major city in the UK and beyond, including an Abandoned Zoo in Ibiza and a Strip Club in Leeds!! Along the way they've played for some of the biggest nights in the Country, including Back to Basics @ MyHouse in Leeds, Tribal Sessions @ Sankeys in Manchester, Renaissance @ Custard Factory in Birmingham, Ketoloco @ MyHouse, Leeds and Ibiza and the legendary Cross in London!! They've had releases on the well respected Danish Minimal Techno label 'Tic Tac Toe' (same label as Trentemoller & Gabriel Ananda). Silver Planet Recordings', whose roster includes Timo Mass, James Holden, John Dahlback & Switch. As well as Uber cool German label 'T.F.E. Records', home to the likes of Jesse Rose. Audiojacks new label 'U.F.O. Records', sister label to Ralph Lawson's massive '20:20vision' imprint and Fergie's excellent 'Excentric Musik' which features releases from the man himself, Greg Treshor, Spektre and Phil Kieran. They've also had their tracks featured on both BBC Radio One and German National Radio Fritz too. Their recent remix of Fergie 'Larne Express' for Excentric received a devilishly scorching reception, climbing high in the Beatport chart and they've been hailed by Fergie himself as the ones towatch for 2008!! Bigger Than Jesus certainly have a rather bright future ahead of them.... Or is that just the white light of Jesus himself at the pearly gates, ready to give 'em a ticking off? Their latest 'Witch Kraft E.P' out on T.F.E Records has received support from DJ's such as Phil Kieran, Audiojack, Luca Bachhetti, Johannes Heil, Axel Bartsch, Mistress De Funk (Radio 1), Mike Monday, Funk D'Void and Tom Pooks, which demostrates their diverse and unique ability to write off the hook beats, appealing to all sorts of freaks! Also watch out for some sick remixes of their tracks from the likes of Audiojack, Phil Kieran, Perc and Fergie all ready to drop soon like a 9 month gone, pregnant laydee!!! Their inluences of course range from Keith Cheggers to Steven Hawkins. If music is the answer then we are all fucked!! Music is the answer!!! Praise the Lord, JESUS LOVES YOU!!!! Lucien Fraud aka Gaz Smith: Lucien is a young Dj from the north east of England who has a passion for all things electronic and underground. Frequenting clubs such as *riffraff, Back2Basics, Shindig, Sugarshack, Bugged Out! (to name just a few) have influenced and fueled his love for dingy, dark tech fuelled music. From the early days of clubbing in the empire it was no surprise that this youngsters first passion was to be involved in the club scene. Watching the likes of Oli Faulkner, Buckley, Dave Seaman, Lisa Loud, Anthony Pappa, Timo Maas, Sander Kleinenberg, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Tenaglia and many of the other elite dj's of the world, made its mark on Lucien, and these days will remain with him forever. Really looking forward to this now after the sucess of Friday night. Just to assure you though I will be playing upfront Trance before the Judge comes on like.
I think too many people are very quick to jump on the lets hate Judge Jules bandwagon. People have short memories when it comes to him I think. He has done an awful lot for the scene over the last 15 years and he has helped it progress. He still showcases new producers on his radio show and in his sets and still helps young DJ's come through. The amount of big names that are about now through his help is quite impressive. Mixing wise we all know he aint what he used to be and yeah he can knock out some dodgy sets however he has always loved playing at The Shack. He always seems to put the effort in and I can honestly say over the last few years that i've seen him play there, I can't remember a bad set by him. He still has it in him to play blinding sets and i'm sure he will at The Shack. Give the guy a break yeah.
this event normally has decent line ups from what i have noticed, but this looks like a let down! jules is shit - karaoke trance at its finest
Haven't seen him in person since the first Magna last September but from what I've heard he's had some shockers, same old Jules really then!! Gotta agree about him at the Shack though, seen him too many times and had some of my best clubbing nights, especially them early gigs he used to do regularly with Lisa Loud He does seem to love playing the Empire and I hope he's on form!!
It's nights like this that fund people like PVD & Schulz being on. They are the real money makers and lets be fair they ahve had PVD and Askew, O'Bir and A&B, have Schulz and Tyas lined up all of the back of nights like this. You can say it's a let down yes, i myself wont be there but your just having a go because of Jules being on. Last time he was there he was unreal playing stuff like Phynn - Lucid and Fred Baker vs Nyram - Confirmation. He's much better when he's headliner and not part of a lineup of about 4 djs all of whom play trancier than him.
Just to let you know that this lineup's been ammended ... some might say for the better? Friday 11th April 08: Main room: 2 Many DJ's Oli Faulkner Upstairs: Judge Jules Bigger Than Jesus Cliffy Burrows Gods: Electro 10pm till 4am
Can't say Jules will be too happy about playing upstairs, it'll be like he's had his thunder stolen!!
