    Students Vs. Townies

When i was a student in Leicester many many moons ago, we'd run riot in every club, bar and pub in the city centre from sunday to thursday, doing all the student nights, offer, drinks promos - whatever - it was our place!

    BUT

on a Friday and Saturday night we'd avoid the place like the plague incase of getting chinned by the locals, white and asians ( as Leciester has a highly mixed culture) alike - because those nights were "Townies Nights"

Even young 16 year old lads FROM Leicester would go out Fridays and Saturdays to places we wouldn't because they were local and on these nights it was THEIR city... We'd (the students all stay around the local pubs and bar (even though we lived 1 mile from the city centre, just by Filbert Street) and just go to the students Union or the 1 or 2 friendly student bars/pubs in town

Is there a similar attitude within Newcastle? Do students not really venture around the Bigg Market/Quayside type areas

Obviously there's bound to be the odd 1 or 2 "i'll go anywhere me" - but is there a general rule?

Ive noticed the crowd in Promise seems to have alot less students than it used to ... Most people look 'local'.

Your hard pressed to find any student types in any numbers around the bars and stuff at the weekends .... Probably avoiding all the beer boys and slappers. Back in my student(ish) days i never ever had a good night out hardly on the weekends - the place felt rammed, expensive and unfriendly to anyone without tatoos on their knuckles and no necks.

So aye - I would say there was a definate 'them and us' thing going on, although its not as obvious as ive seen in other places where the lines are drawn more distinctly - Since newcastle has a massive student population, they are more of an accepted thing... but can stick out a bit depending on where you go in the country.

    As always, my take anyhow.

im not a student but i steer well clear of the bigg market, not through so much fear of something happening, its just a minging place where the social rejects go, theres a definate divide in my opinion

the quayside aint as bad like, but the bars down there are just plain wank

station is by far the best place for me, think thats probs where most the studenty/trendy types go too

When I was a student in Leeds Id generally be the same, went out a few weekends but it was a fucking nightmare getting a taxi home and all the pubs were too expensive and filled with an older crowd.

We usually just stayed local (in Headingley) at the weekends or had a session in the house.

Wish I was a student again

In Durham most students avoid the city centre like the plague on a weekend, and just go to their colleges instead. They do go out in the city during the week though. There is a well known reputation of student/ townie animosity here. Think it's to do with the price of drinks as well. There are also a few pubs that students rarely go in at any time.

Mind you, I wouldn't go out drinking even in my own town on a Fri/ Sat night, because it's a total meat market, full of drunken idiots!

Judging by what goes on in the Bigg Market on friday nights (Check trance_fan's topic on that) ... I dont blame students for keeping away on the weekend.

Its like Beirut at about 9.30pm on a friday night outside RamJams (Or whatever its called now)

Why would any self respecting student who wants to protect their brain, want it splattered all over the kerb over an argument on whether or not you looked at wor jackies kebab in the wrong way.

Its a pity, it might be turning away potential promise clubbers in the fear of getting bother. Its position isnt ideal for making a newbie feel very safe. And yes im only putting myself in a newbies shoes there - im not saying thats how it is, its the exact opposite.

the only 'students' that now, for example, go to Promise are 3yrd years/final years (not local but have been here awhile ) or people who have just finished (lots of the board members) OR college students (LOCAL)

there's 1000's of new students staying away from the weekend scene

    in my opinion

most of the people i know from uni only go out during the week into town, generally coz its cheaper + union puts good weekend nights on, altho if i was a southerner and i'd just came up and somebody gets stabbed in full view on bigg market i wouldn't like to be goin there on a weekend

There seems to be a lot less animosity between students and townies than there used to be. I was a student up here 1990-1994, and no-one dared go out on a weekend. Now I know quite a lot of students who go out on weekends, but the majority still seem to stay away. The general feeling amongst students seems to be that townies will chin them, while townies get fed up with students trashing the place, so gross generalisations on both sides!
