    Starting your own club night

Have been looking at a couple of possible venues in Leeds to start a new house night as decent ones are few and far between down there.

Just really want some advice from people with experience of the duties involved of getting a successful night up and running.

I.E Any costs involved and any promotional work which should be done to ensure people actually come through the door. Oh, and any legal bits too.

    Cheers

The majority of licensing (music licences, entertainments licence) and the like is already taken care of by most venues. Only things you've got to comply with is opening times and local law (a good example of this is flyering/postering - up here postering is illegal).

And cheap booze always helps, smile (mondays @ foundation) built a huge following on that ;)

Who decides on the booze prices, surely the club must have some policies on the drink prices.

it varies from place to place...

if a place has a promotions manager you find they may drop the prices for certain nights, the last night I did the bar manager dropped the cheap bottles to £1 each for us..

Are you sure about that because between Speedqueen, Kiss Da Funk, Retro, Discotheque and the odd other house rooms at other venues I think theres quite a few to choose from

youve probably picked the worst 4 house nights in Leeds there

Basics has probably been the most influential house night in the UK over the years

I did say DECENT house night.

Discoteque - Holds shitty house nights twice monthy with the odd decent night

Kissdafunk - Insnt very often and when it is its pretty gash most of the time. Avec cheesy vocal gay house.

Basics and Dirty disco currently hold the best house nights imo but these are weekend events.

Im looking for a weekday night geared at students really(cheap drinks)

i have never done and have no intention of doing it so my knowledge of the actual runnings of it are limited but from a punters point of view, you have to have a good product that is individual enough to have an indentity. You have to have a music style that isnt identicle to every other night in Leeds. Also make sure you get all your mates down and give them cheaper entry when you first start out as most of them will say 'yeah ill definitely come' but alot of them wont and also make sure there are GIRLS.

Leeds is quite a good city in terms of house music as it has a big history of good dance music (aswell as the influence of Manchester etc) so there is one positive in your favour

Are you looking at booking "names" to play or just running it so you lot can play because if its the latter then its going to be quite hard to get it busy every time.

Looking at starting out small. Then hopefully if things go well enough. Move on with a few guest DJ's.

Not a definate about it being leeds. Harrogate and wakefield have also been looked at. Wakefield has a pretty good scene at the minute though.

Really looking for a night similar to habit. The main reason behind all of this is that every time i want to go out to a decent house night the only ones that are promoted are the super comercial ones. You have to seek out the rest of the underground nights. I will have to do a lot of market research in order to find out EXACTLY what the state of weekday clubbing is

What i do know, being a student is, most students go home on the weekends and the ones that do stay tend not to go out. Its more Leeds residents that go out weekends while the student crowd tends to go for the midweek cheap night out

They may also not be as musically educated as you and your mates, therefore an underground night could be in direct competition with a night that also offers cheap entry and cheap drinks but with cheesy music. A lot of student birds tend to love a bit of cheese, therefore the lads will follow....

Good luck with whatever you do though Gib mate

Re: Re: Re: Starting your own club night

When Danny first started doing Habit it was just one off parties on Bank Holidays at Clear Bar in town and wasnt even called Habit. It would be 5 or 6 local djs doing one hours sets. They used to be rammed all day long and were brilliant fun and it was a great place for us to play out once in a while and meet loads of new people in the 'scene'.

Then it moved monthly to a Sunday night. They were hard going sometimes because there would be times where the only people who were in there were us lot and it really was soul destroying when you were playing to a handful of your mates who had seen you play a million times before at their house.

Then Udberg got involved and they start doing the club nights, again they were on a Bank Holiday but they were always always busy and Danny and Scott started booking the big name guests like Desyn and Silicone Soul and doing one off things like The Sage which had never been done before.

They then had a client base to develop on so it moved to monthly (think it was last october) and now its one of the best club nights in town; although i am biased i do really think this as they are putting on people that they want to see, not just names that will fill the club up.

Anyway enough bumming of Danny and Udders

Just how to see how it goes i guess. Its a long way off happening yet. Lots of things need to be sorted. Need to find a couple of partners with similar ideas.

Cheers for the support though pal:)

send Wot a PM, he'll tell you all about the highs and lows of putting a night on.

Try setting fire to £400 every month for a while to get the hang of it.
