Speeding up my PC (What new hardware?)

I built my pc a few years ago and up until then i was quite up to date with all the latest hardware for the obvious reasons but now I havent got a clue!

Basically, I'm sick of running out of hdd space and I'm really sick of my pc being slow and taking ages to open programs.

    Spec:

    Athlon XP 2400+
    512MB DDR ram
    Geforce 2 GTS
    40GB hdd
    Asus 87N8X-E motherboard

The graphics card was a radeon 9700 but it broke, as did my old mobo so both ahve since been replaced with budget hardware :(

What do you recommend i upgrade to make my computer run faster for day to day use? (no games as i'll invest in a decent card later on in the year, and my hdd is getting replaced very soon).

I only want about 180gb or so.

Budget hmmm.. it's my birthday on friday so i'll ask my mam to get me something for about £50 and then I'll buy other stuff myself. Or just add some money on top of what they give me cash-wise and get something.

I'm just sick of my pc stalling all the time

Yo can pick up a good s939 motherboard for £50 (the Asrock Dual SATA2 939) I have one and its class. It has both an AGP and PCI-e slot,, therefore you can run your old card for now and buy a better PCI-e one later (when AGP is finally binned).

    As its a 939 board you'll need a 939 chip.. therefore A64. You can get a 3000+ for £90 or a 3500+ for £130.

512MB of ram would cost about £30.

HDD as really cheap at the mo.. 160GB for around £55 - £60.

Totally price of all that would be about £230 for a 3000 + or £270 for a 3500+

Pretty cheap.. all prices from Ocuk

    I'm damn good :king:

I read a lot of reviews and browse a lot of techy forums.
The spin points are mint.. but raptors are where its at.. I want 2 74GBs in a RAID config.. it'll be fucking fast.

But not as quiet as the spin points.. one of which I have on order :)

Phase change is where its at :p

On a serious not though.. 7v quiet as fuck fans will do ya.
Don't believe silent x's claims of silent fans.. there were proven not too long ago of printing misleading information about their products.

Water cooling is an option but tbh I just don't trust water in my pc..

    *Edit*

Akasa Ambers are good.. 120mm, very quiet and very good cfm..

now that is asking for trouble, i'm sure the oil would drip out of your usb ports, cause they aren't sealed

Yeah I saw something similar to that not too long ago.

Tbh if I was gonna use extreme cooling I'd go for Phase cooling, vapochill, mach 2 etc. I'd seriously considered buyin a mach 2 unit a few months ago as it matched my case (Lian Li PC-65) :camp ::)

Have you see the overclocked P4 running on liquid nitrogen??
6.5Ghz.. with a massive FSB (1250 or something like that!)

Insane.. I'll get some links :)
