    Spam and Board Abuse!

Hmm.... recently, MOST of the signups have been for Spammers rather than new active members. We seem to get 2 sorts of spam signups recently; Automated Spam signups which we seem to keep on top of ( probably about 40 per day) - they are just deleted and Just Board Spammers which are people from companies, events, organisations trying to promote their products whether it's nights, their DJ's, their newest releases, etc

I thought i'd start a poll to see what peoples feelings are on these - for example, here's 2 just from today :

    http://www.nucastle.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74976
    and
    http://www.nucastle.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74974

So, what are peoples thoughts on this? Are we as the admin doing enough? is there too much spam? or is the situation ok? are other boards worse?

should we take more or less measures? should we be harsher? it's a tough balance - too tighter restrictions and it can stiffle the place or less restrictions and people can't be arsed to wade thru the shite.

Its not bad to be honest ... if the promo spammers are kept in the Going Out forum then i suppose people know what to expect in there .... which is people plugging their nights.

The admins do a good job of keeping it all in order i think :)

They don't bother me, I generally know if i want to look in the thread by the title so avoid them knowing they will be spam.

Plus on the other side of the coin if i was running my own night or label i'd be registering on every board known to man spamming their sites doing exactly like they do so i know they are just doing what they have too for the good of their night and label.

They might not be active members but they are harmless.

i think the spam situation on this board is really good compared to others! and to be fair MOS you expalined the way in which you stop spammers thru the week and its all manually done so user names like "zoelee" & "AKHQ" are pretty hard to spot as spammers

its not the end of the world, like its been said the fucking horrificly cheesey thread titles give them away so i just dont click on them

i knew they were genuine users hence why they were authorised - u have to give everyone a chance. It's the majority of recent signups that are all automated, you can spot them - all the information fields are randomly made up and not correctly filled in - so for occupation you get 'London' plus they all come from similar made up domains

Not sure what I would come under, been lurking here for a while, only really post to promote Distorted Events tho.

Either way it's your boards do what you wish.

I voted for change, but I think you guys do a good job of keeping spam down.

For the autobots, why not just use a captcha module when registering? that will stop most of them! There must be one for vBulletin.

Also, why not have a minimum post count of 50 for Going Out? And also we get ads for stuff thats bloody miles away which seems like a waste of time aswell

The only thing id like to shed some light on in the events section is the blantant misue of how some are promoting events, that 'marc_vexar' who promotes Balance needs to stop what he's been doing in the Disco Noir & Jaunt thread, total piss take. Everyone has nights to run/promote but you also have to have a level of respect.

Other than that it doesn't seem too bad, some forums get hammered with shite in comparison.

there is rules about this (cross promoting) - however we can't check every post - if there's anything you want to bring to our attention - report it and we'll sort it

I think its okay generally - the only ones that piss me off are when you go into either the music or events forum and the same poster has listed about 5/6+ threads on events all of which noone has no interest in, like hard house nights in stoke or something similar. Crazyclubber66 would come into this category, needs banning imho ;)

The balance lads cross promoting their events in other threads is bad crack as well. Their shameless promotion of their night isnt limited to the board though - i was in HMV the other day and their flyers had been left in just about every section of the store stuck in with the cd's/dvd's etc. I was in fucking stitches, its totally shocking to be fair like.
